Lily Of the Valley

Impressive debut from Dublin four-piece

Maeve Heslin, 29 May 2012

Lily Of The Valley is the long-awaited debut from Dublin electro rockers Funeral Suits. Formed in 2008, the foursome spent the last two years writing and recording the LP, and it’s fair to say that their dedication has paid off in bucketloads.

A veritable sonic treat, the 11-tracker veers from acoustic to electro to lighters-in-the-air melodic rock without missing a beat, thanks in part to producer Stephen Street (knob twiddler extraordinaire who’s worked with Blur and The Smiths).

The album opens, and closes (who doesn’t love a bit of aural symmetry?) with haunting a cappella vocal harmonies (‘Marys Revenge’, and the surf rocky ‘I Still Love The High’), while in-between showcasing killer riffs you’ll be humming all day (the excellent ‘Colour Fade’), even pausing for the odd acoustic number – with a bit of cello thrown in for good measure (‘We Only Attack Ourselves’). Though the first half of the album comes across slightly stronger than the second, Lily Of The Valley is nonetheless a hugely impressive and tightly-produced body of work from a band who know that good things come to those who wait.
