Hotly-tipped Londoners deliver lukewarm debut
Formed a year ago and occupying a similar sonic territory to Friendly Fires, Editors and Coldplay, London-based quintet Zulu Winter have set many tongues wagging round Camden-way of late. Language is their debut offering and it’s a decidedly indie affair full of reverb, heavy guitars and impassioned vocals courtesy of Will Daunt. Sadly though, the prevalent Chris Martin-isms and penchant for unremarkable rhythms and riffs (‘Small Pieces’) begins to grate after the heady heights of second track ‘We Should Be Swimming’ and the record starts to sound a little tired by the midway point. The hip-shaking ‘Silver Tongue’ and brooding ‘Key To My Heart’ are enjoyable cuts, but ultimately it’s not enough to separate Zulu Winter from the rest of the pack.
