Country Icon Indulges His Inner Karaoke King
The thought of an artist releasing a record full of cover versions can test a reviewer’s patience, but, when it comes to grizzled grandfather of country Willie Nelson, it’s a different story. He, after all, is a great interpreter. Highlights include his stripped back reimagining of Coldplay’s ‘The Scientist’, his ragged version of Pearl Jam’s ‘Just Breathe’ – and his ode to, erm, herbal cigarettes ‘Roll Me Up’, alongside fellow devotees of the doobie Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson and Jamey Johnson, which has to be heard to be believed.
