Crooner indulges his inner karaoke king
In many ways you might intuit that Chris Isaak’s latest record is a vanity project: while his heart is clearly in the right place, does the world really need 19 covers of some of the best rock ‘n’ roll songs ever made? If you answered, “Yes, indeed and why not?…” to that question, then this album, my friends, is for you. Recorded in the legendary Sun Studios (where the likes of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis cut some utterly classic numbers) the renditions of ‘Great Balls Of Fire,’ ‘Miss Pearl’ and ‘It’s Now Or Never’ are faithfully (almost immaculately) re-created. And no better man than Chris to do it. But if you’ve already got copies of the originals then the point is less obvious. A curiosity.
