Brace yourself - tonight marks the the first Dublin gig of U2's iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE tour. As part of Hot Press' special U2 edition, we talk to HamsandwicH singer Niamh Farrell about discovering U2 and that damn 'Bono Backlash'
“I lived in Scotland for quite a bit of my childhood, so U2 weren’t as massive for me as they would have been for people growing up here."
"I remember listening to ‘With Or Without You’ on repeat – not when it came out, but when I eventually discovered it. It’s such a great song. It's fantastic when something comes out of Ireland and grabs the world’s attention. They’ve stood the test of time too, and are constantly pushing the boundaries with their tours."
“You could see just how big they were through ‘the Bono Backlash’, and how this massive band had so many people in their own country trying to knock them. People give Bono such a hard time, when they don’t know the man at all. It's ridiculous. I say: fair play to him."
“I’ve never met them myself, though Ollie met Bono. He mentioned he played in a band called HamsandwicH; Bono looked at him and said, ‘You should probably change your name’. Cheers, Bono! We’ve heard that The Edge is a fan, though. He was talking about Irish music he liked, and he mentioned us along with Hozier, Kodaline and the like. Our parents would have grown up with the band, so they were pretty impressed with that."
“Who knows – maybe we'll be invited down to 3Arena. To play that is!”
