Matthew E. White
The wild facial hair and near-constant Ray Bans may make those attending his forthcoming Whelan’s gig momentarily think they’re gazing at a fresh-faced Rick Rubin on stage, but then Matthew E. White’s lush country soul will hit. Locating a sumptuous strain of ‘70s US chamber pop that nods to country, funk and big-hearted soul, the young Virginian employs strings, horns and steel guitar in his act, and also happens to possess a voice of pure honey. He’s been earning comparisons to everyone from Randy Newman and Al Green to the more modern likes of lauded Tennessee alt. country types Lambchop, recently signed to the illustrious Domino label, and has worked with the likes of Bon Iver and Mountain Goats. So you know the boy’s quality. Oh, and the ‘E’ is for ‘Entertainment’. Allegedly.
See: him live at Whelan’s, Dublin, on January 27.
