A one-man band from NYC, Bright Moments is the name for Kelly Pratt’s multi-instrumental project, which proved an enormous hit at last year’s SXSW. Mining a musical vein similar to Zach Condon’s Beirut, trumpets announce themselves joyously, flutes and fugelhorns dip in and out, all while assured self-harmonies swim sweetly by. Lyrically, it is equallly intriguing, drawing on an old book of Scandinavian poetry and the story of the girl who became the first person ever to be cured of rabies. If the name hints at a sunny disposition and love of afrobeat, it’s confirmed on the blissful, entrancing likes of ‘Travelers’. Natives, his debut, was recorded track-by-track, in a “slow-motion musicianship” fashion by Pratt (playing nigh-on everything, of course) over Winter 2010 in his apartment and its poured over, painstakingly crafted creation ensured it was a perfect introduction for Bright Moments. Pratt has toured with LCD Soundsystem and Arcade Fire before – he has all the tools to make a similar impact.
