It’s tough to know which loose-leaf binder to file experimental electronic producer Benny Smiles away in; the hilariously racy ‘NCAD Girl’ is pure parody with a Chromeo twist, ‘Sunday Morning’ mixes chunky basslines with tropical pop melodies and ‘Moonlight’ featuring Ham Sandwich’s Niamh Farrell is radio-friendly whimsy at its finest. Known to his postman as Ross Fortune, this shapeshifting musicmaker has covered a whole lot of musical ground in just two years, barely stepping a foot wrong, thanks to a finely-tuned ear and a sneaky musical past (we know he performed with Dublin collective The Gorgeous Colours, although we’re not entirely sure what he did there). The Kilcoole native is keeping schtum about future projects, but if anyone out there has an ‘80s-styled children’s flick to soundtrack, Benny Smiles is your man.
