The electro-pop scene is about to get a shot in the arm from the Sierra Leone-born, London-bred Aminata ‘Amy’ Kabba, a rising teen star who publishes her own fanzine and was in a Destiny’s Child tribute act as a little tyke. ‘City Lights’, a track created with MNEK (another up-and-comer of the same age), caught the ear of Gary Barlow, who signed her up as a writer and singer to his Future label. She also sang backing vocals on Chery Cole’s ‘One Thousand’ last year, so she’s clearly caught the ear of British pop’s major players. Her own single ‘Play The Game Boy’ was released in November and, whilst the title nodded to her retro love, the song itself betrayed k-pop influences and got its own dubstep remix. Fun, playful, and with a real youthful zest for life and art, A*M*E’s idol is Janet Jackson. A million record label execs run to see if she has any brothers...
