Aluna Francis and George Reid are a duo in thrall to the inventive, ahead-of-its-time R&B that swallowed pop music in the late ‘90s. Hailing from London, they’re also looking closer to home and adding a garage sensibility to the mix, as well as the electronica ingenuity that has made the British capital one of the most exciting, fertile musical hubs in the world in recent times. Infectious, primary-coloured pop bounced and pulled out of shape, sprinkled with digital glitter and buffered up with some nu-soul. Drums shake, stutter and warp. It all makes for a compelling listen – check out the shimmy and strut of ‘You Know You Like It’, the alien, ice-cool ‘Your Drums, Your Love’, and the platinum-plated, exotic high water mark thus far ‘Just A Touch’ for evidence. In a world of any real justice, this would be the kind of stuff that gobbles up David Guetta and his army of chart imitators for good in 2013. Maybe it will. It helps that they can do it live too, with Aluna proving a captivating onstagepresence. Just ask anyone that saw their Arthur’s Day appearance in the Dakota.
