Christmas treats from Sufjan Stevens and Tracey Thorn, and a radio drama based on Wayne Coyne's head are just some of the wonders located within...
Free Music Friday is zooming off now to Limerick for the latest Jägermeister Freezer Session, which finds Toby Kaar, We Cut Corners, R.S.A.G. and Leading Armies sharing the Dolan’s stage. First though, we’ve another bumper of crop of tunes to add fizz to your weekend.
We start as ever at [link]3voor12.vpro.nl/luisterpaal/albums.html[/link] where the latest albums from Guided By Voices, Styles P, The Fire Harvest, Fairmont, Sinkane, Dakota Suite, Policy, UV Race and the very wonderful Cody Chesnutt are all streaming.
[link]music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/#/1[/link] adds Rage Against The Machine, Wu Block, Freeway, Alicia Keys and the last Glee soundtrack to the mix; Junkie XL, Graham Parker & The Rumour and Offshore are lurking with considerable intent at [link]music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/1[/link]and [link]www.npr.org/series/98679384/first-listen[/link] has seasonal offerings from Sufjan Stevens and Tracey Thorn.
America’s National Public Radio also has a complete Patrick Watson concert for your download delectation, and a Martha Wainwright acoustic set that’s also begging to be iTuned.
Dublin buzz band Gangs justify the hype with three killer tunes that can be downloaded from [link]soundcloud.com/gangsofficial[/link]
You can catch them live next week in Bruxells, Dublin when they open for Palma Violets who are getting people all excited on the other side of the Irish Sea.
We’re also loving this free tune from American R’n’B experimentalist Evy Jane.
Legendary Californian radio station KCRW has concocted a War Of The Worlds-style drama entitled Wayne Coyne’s Human Head Shaped Tumor, which features the likes of the Flaming Lips, Bill Callahan, Okkervil River, Eleanor Friedberger and our old Brooklyn buddies Oneida.
KCRW also had Orbital drop by t’other day and perform this ace version of ‘Chime’.
Chromatics’ generosity becomes almost embarrassing as they treat us to another elctro pop groover, ‘Cherry’.
Chromatics also line up alongside Jessie Ware, Little Dragon, Rihanna, Charli XCX and a stack more on this excellent [link]www.gorillavsbear.net/2012/11/28/november-2012-mix[/link] download mix.
Free Music Friday is very much liking the look of Punk Jews, a new documentary, “which follows an underground Jewish community expressing their identity in unconventional ways that challenge stereotypes and break down barriers. From Hassidic punk rockers to Yiddish street performers to African-American Jewish activists, Punk Jews shows an emerging movement in New York City of Jews asserting their Jewish identity, defying the norm, and doing so at any cost.”
Meanwhile, Metallica have put up this extended trailer for their Quebec Magnetic concert film, which looks pretty damn amazing.
Our weekly visit to [link]www.xlr8r.com/mp3[/link] yields dancey new downloads from Cloaka & Boxwork, Kashii, Maru, Kuhn, Billow Observatory, Roche and Visonn.
We know nothing about Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared save that they’re Irish, make quality electronica and have two tunes available for free [link]donthugmeimscared.bandcamp.com/album/cautious[/link] download; interviewed in the current Hot Press by our Maeve Heslin, Lemonada also has a rake of tracks available for your [link]soundcloud.com/lemonadajams[/link] delectation; as do Limerick’s Bleeding Heart Pigeons at [link]soundcloud.com/bleedingheartpigeons[/link]
All praise the generosity of the Spectral Blasphemy label who are going the ‘pay what you want’ route with their new 35-track compilation. Featured acts include Bloodshed By Reality, Betraying The Martyrs, Dead Silence Hides My Cries, Ovid’s Withering and, er, Beware The Lobster. And, yes, you’ve guessed right – there’s no Country ‘N’ Irish on it.
Shellac celebrate their imminent curating of All Tomorrow’s Parties in the UK, with this free mixtape, which includes themselves, Future Of The Left, The Cravats, Arcwelder, Mono and zillions more.
There’s a definite whiff of the Nick Caves – that’s a compliment by the way! – about this new tune from Dubliner Barry Finnimore.
Dez demonstrates why he’s one of US rap’s hottest properties with his Real Talk mixtape.
Video of the week by a country mile is this gobsmacking FIFA-inspired clip for Hot Chip’s ‘Don’t Deny Your Heart’.
Which is sadly where Free Music Friday has to run out the door to get that train to Limerick. If you’re in Dolan’s – or the fine Mogul Emperor curry house – tonight, make sure to come and say hello. Send all your links for next week to @stuartclark66
