In a two page resignation letter, Martin McGuinness said that Arlene Foster must not be allowed to hold an Executive role having been in charge of the Renewable Heating Initiative and that new elections must be held in Northern Ireland.
In his letter, McGuinness said: "The Minister responsible for the RHI scheme should have no executive role in overseeing how it is rectified", directing a clear shot at First Minister Arlene Foster, who has refused to resign even temporarily from her role to allow an investigation or inquiry into the botched Reneweable Heating Initiative to take place.
Martin McGuinness also finished his letter by saying: "We now need an election to allow the people to make their own judgement on these issues democratically at the ballot box."
Martin McGuinness has been Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland for ten years, working alongside Ian Paisley, Peter Robinson and Arlene Foster in his role.
