It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it
An Australian study has found that 31% of women having heterosexual sex did not have an orgasm during their last sexual experience. This means that heterosexual women experience less pleasure than homosexual women or men. 24% of those who had lesbian sex and only 5.2% of men did not orgasm during their last sexual encounter. According to the researchers, this is because straightforward heterosexual sex is more likely to be more satisfying for men. The good news is that the researchers also found that if oral sex or manual stimulation was added, 90% of women were able to reach orgasm. Go for it, boys!

Channel 4 is set to screen a documentary called Masturbation for Girls this November. The documentary follows three women, for whom the art of self-love is still a mystery, to New York to receive therapy and training from sex pioneer Dr Betty Dodson. Interesting….

45 years of the Pill
This year is the 45th birthday of the contraceptive pill. You’d think that by this time we’d all know exactly how it worked and what it’s failings were, but that’s not the case. This September, Schering AG launched a new low-dose contraceptive pill in Ireland. The launch was accompanied by the results of a nationwide survey on Irish women’s contraceptive habits, beliefs, attitudes and misconceptions about the pill. Here are some of the results.

- 22% of Irish women are using some form of birth control. Of those, 53% are on the pill, 14% use condoms and 6% use intrauterine contraception. 5% said they or their partner had chosen to be sterilized.
- Almost half of us who are on the pill started using it between the ages of 16 and 19.
- Most of us don’t know any of the extra benefits of taking the pill. Only 13% knew that the helped protect against ovarian cancer and 7% knew that it protected against endometrial cancer. Just over 12% knew that the pill made periods less painful and only 8% said the pill made periods more regular.
- One in eight Irish women believe it is not possible to get pregnant the first time they have sex. Afraid not, girls.
- 34% of women believed that taking the pill for a long time could make them infertile. This is a misconception.
- 6% felt that taking the pill protected them from sexually transmitted diseases. Hello, are you crazy? Where the hell did this idea come from?
- 52% of women have no idea when they are at their most fertile. The peak ovulation time for most women is two weeks after menstruation.
This week's top sex tip: Flavoured lubes
Anyone who has read this column a few times will know that I am a big fan of lubricant. It makes handjobs easy, anal pain-free, sex toys feel even better – and it’s handy to have around for those occasions where you are not as wet as you’d like to be.
A few years back, most lubes tasted disgusting, but that’s changed. Now there are loads of different flavours and brands to choose from so you should find something to your liking.
My favourite is Durex Heat. Strictly this isn’t a flavoured lube but a warming one, but it’s still the best tasting one in my opinion. Be warned though, Durex Tingle does what is say on the tin and produces a great tingling sensation, but tastes vile.
If you’re not sure, try the ID Juicy Lubes or WET Flavoured Lubes variety packs. The O’My lubes are all natural flavours and are low in calories. All of these are available from LoveHoney.ie and are a cheap and easy way to add some variety to foreplay.
Flavoured lubes are a great addition to fellatio. The lube makes the penis slippery, allowing your lips to glide over it. Flavoured lubes also make any blowjob-handjob combination easier.
A great thing to try is to apply the flavoured lube to your lover using your tongue. Use a small amount at a time placed on the tip of your tongue. This takes ages, but is guaranteed to have him, or her, writhing in pleasure. Yummy…
