As part of Hot Press' U2 Special Collectors' Edition we talk to those who are up close and personal with the band. Here, we hear from theflyshades.com owner Igor Gutierrez about Bono's iconic wraparounds
“I was 18, and living in Venezuela, when I first saw the video for ‘The Fly’ in 1991. I remember thinking ‘what is this?’ – Bono, with the leather jacket and the glasses! It just didn’t seem like him anymore. The sound was still him, of course, but I was crazy about the sunglasses – they just seemed so cool."
"At that time everybody was in RayBans, and yet here he was in giant wraparound shades. It was a little shocking, but also incredibly attractive. Instantly, I wanted a pair for myself."
“Tom Petty wore the fly shades in a video in 1972, and Keith Richards used to wear them playing with the Rolling Stones. But when Bono wore them in the 1990s, there was just something different about the effect. That's where the idea for theflyshades.com came from. We receive orders for the fly shades all the time from U2 fans. Even when the band isn’t on the road or in the news, we have people making inquiries. At Bono’s request, they were even part of a boxset release of Achtung Baby in 2011 – and so we really do have a special relationship with the band and with their fans.”
