The shock news from the world of rock and pop this week is that John Oates (of Hall & fame) has split with his mustache.
The soup strainer ditched the diminutive blue-eyed soul singer after being offered its own animated series on www.funnyordie.com, the online comedy and satire channel founded by Will Ferrell and Huffington Post contributor Adam McKay.
The face snake makes it clear in the J-Stache trailer that he feels his contribution to the Hall & Oates success story was undervalued,
“I’m a kick-ass mustache,” he insists. “I made Hall & Oates famous. Who came up with the pink pants and white boots combo, huh? Me! Who came up with the handclaps in ‘Private Eyes’? Me again!”
Listing his interests and hobbies as “ladies, booze, weed & ladies drinking booze while smoking weed”, J adds: “Yeah, I get high. Yeah, I know your girlfriend. Do I write hits? You bet bitches.”
It could have been a car crash, but judging by the two-minute www.jstache.com teaser it’s going to be a weekly must-watch.
Ditto The Cleveland Show, the much-anticipated Family Guy spin-off, which premieres next month in the States and is currently previewing at www.fox.com/cleveland.
Our fave line so far has to be: “You can’t just replace my dog like Brad Pitt replaced Jennifer Aniston. Or John Mayer replaced Jennifer Aniston. Or Vince Vaughn replaced Jennifer Aniston. Or that munch from the Counting Crows replaced Jennifer Aniston. The point is my dog is not Jennifer Aniston.”
Never mind that Russian fellow who kindly assisted St. Patrick’s Athletic in getting through to the next round of the Europa League qualifiers, this year’s most spectacular own goal has to be Raygun lead singer Ray Gun (see what they’ve done there?) telling Channel 4 viewers that their music is like what you’d hear if you “stuck Iggy Pop, James Brown, David Bowie and Shirley Bassey in a lift.”
Wanting the whole world to be able to share in this Grade A plonkerdom, journalist Rhodri Marsden edited it down into a five-minute Lack Of Self-Awareness clip, which despite the best efforts of the Sony Music lawyers can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=NzWpNdGb4Ps.
Which just leaves time for quick visits to www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5NSvtWirS4 (The Top 10 Most Ridiculous Black Metal Videos of All Time); www.footballshirtcollection.com (Irish person who really ought to get out more); www.musiomusictv.com (Little Boots, Bat For Lashes, Mark Ronson and Bell X1 guest on endearingly dumb interview show); and www.doctorrosenrosen.com (Lily Allen gets the ace remix treatment).
