hotpress.com member's update: "Peanut Moro me bollix. It's not the fucking same!"
13 September 2007
We do hope things are going well out there in the big bad (beautiful?) world. Here in HP Towers, we're hunkered down - or should that be 'bunkered down'? - getting ready for the wild extravaganza that is Music Ireland '07 in the RDS. It's going to be a hell of a bash, that's for sure. You want to get up close and personal with Prince's drummer? Read on for more details! In the meantime...
Some news just in: the battle for the No. 1 spot in the album charts this week is a bare-knuckle one. It looks as if Kanye West will take the prize but Paddy Casey is battling hard - as is current Hot Press cover star Josh Ritter. It'll be interesting to see how the 1-2-3 lines up in a few days time...
On the subject of Josh, there's been a BIG reaction to the Josh Ritter CD, given free with the current issue of Hot Press. Lots of shops have been selling out, but you should be able to find it, as we've been replenishing stocks to beat the band. But PLEASE! Let us know if you've difficulty getting your hands on what is sure to be a collector's item, worth a sizeable chunk of change, in a few years.
And now, a free glo-stick* to all those who identified last week's lyrical puzzler:
"Good thieves of burning cars/ encirle poisoned rivers minds and hearts/
Horses want to dance/ but find their wings are damaged/ water damaged/
Gold is selling now/ but hurry mighty ocean rising fast/
A big man with a Plan/ has got a storm a coming/
Monster coming"
It was, of course, a snatch from 'Atlantis To Interzone', by Mercury Prize-winners Klaxons. But you can wipe that triumphant grin off your face - we've got another one to get you pondering right here, right now - and it's this:
"Everybody's talking 'bout the stormy weather/
And what's a man do to but work out whether/ it's true?/
Looking for a man with a focus and a temper/
Who can open up a map and see between/ one and two"
What do you mean, we're obsessed with the weather? And even if we were, would you f*****g blame us?
So, what is the song - and who recorded it? Tell us that - and tell us some more if you like ...
*glo-stick may not be free. In fact it may not even glow.

JOSH RITTER, HARD-FI, ELECTRIC PICNIC REPORT AND STUDENT SPECIAL
Alright, this ain't no mere plugerama, but there are things that we are duty bound to tell you! We've already mentioned sell-outs of the 120+ page magnum opus that is the latest issue of Hot Press. In addition to the FREE CD featuring exclusive and rare videos and tracks by Josh, there's a brilliant interview with everyone's favourite Idahoan, written by Olaf Tyaransen.
This issue is also the Hot Press student special - so if you're in college or about to start there, grab a copy fast. There's lots of fun, advice and other brass and bullshit for you to ponder and laugh at... as well as an interview with the USI President Richard Morrisroe that's well worth a gander. He sounds like he's got his head screwed on.
There's also a full Electric Picnic report, with loads of great pictures. Why, you might even find yourself in there! Well known drug fiend Howard Marks is in the Mad Hatter's Box. HP sex queen Anne Sexton goes to a Fetish Club. Plus there's interviews to savour with Hard Fi, Calvin Harris, The Enemy, Sonic Youth, the Boss' broad Patti Scialfa (who's very cool, matter of fact) - oh and far too much more to mention! Phew!
In all good newsagents, priced E3.50

A word to the wise. This year's Music Ireland is shaping up to be a cracking weekend. On the fun side there'll be a competition to decide who is IRELAND'S FASTEST DRUMMER.
There'll be lots of wisdom (and great yarns) passed on by people who know the business inside out, including Stephen Street (producer of The Smiths and Blur, among others), Geoff Travis (of Rough Trade and currently manager of the great Jarvis Cocker) and vocal maestro Brian Kennedy.
*The fascinating exhibition of U2's artwork 'Stealing Hearts At A Travelling Show' will make its European debut.
*Prince's drummer John Blackwell will give a demonstration of stick-work at its most remarkable and exciting.
*Paddy Casey will lead the charge on a brilliant bill of live music.
And that's just for starters. In other words, it's Be There Or Be Square time. Be where, you ask? The RDS Main Hall, Dublin on October 6th and 7th.

3. David Baldacci's unsavoury contacts within the vast American military-industrial complex have lent authenticity to his tangled tales of insider dealings in the corridors of power. Read more about the story behind his latest thriller here:
4. Are you Ireland's fastest drummer? The competition is on to find out - and a lot of fun will be had along the way. So strut your stuff and you could be the one to walk away with an XP1 bass drum pedal from Taye Drums, worth E255! It is all happening courtesy of Keynote Music. Ooooh! Aaaah! Details here:

Deadly. Any news on unicorns or Don Cockburn?
**mark_g:
Poor old Don, like Jim Davidson, just wouldn't cut it in this topsy-turvy, PC media driven world we live in.
But I hear the new Cortina looks deadly.
**gladys:
My Ma had an orange Capri - best car ever.
Cockburn is a great surname. Gladys Cockburn. I like it.
