hotpress.com members update: " Not bad for a Ballymun lad who left school when he was about 15"
8 August 2007
Okay, we worried last time that we'd cause storms by celebrating the rare appearance of Mr. Blue Sky, so we take full responsibility for costs incurred by anyone who had to take a boat to work this past week. Actually, we don't really mean that. Don't sue us. Sorry all the same though...
Now, to jog those fine brains of yours re the lyrical teaser of last week:
"Hurry up, hurry up and wait
I stay awake all week and still I wait
I got the blues, please come see
What your loving means to me"
Last week we gave you an easy one, but that doesn't take from the achievement of buds, to whom we would like to say a hearty "nice one!" for getting the answer right: 'Sunday Girl' by Blondie. Kudos!
Maybe we'll step it up a gear this time around:
"Louise holds a handful of rain, tempting you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing really, nothing to turn off..."
Start the Countdown theme tune. Now give it socks, dearies!

Essential Reading on hotpress.com Department
1. The hotpress.com Member CDs
You know when you gather loads of change together, and you find yourself with enough coinage for a cheap-tastic album? Imagine if that wait was even shorter. Imagine if you were a hotpress.com member and you could get fabbo CDs like Sinead O'Connor, Somadrome and more for the pithy price of e10. Imagine that, eh?

2. Gorgeous George - Tom Mathews' tribute to George Melly
With the deaths of Ingmar Bergman, Lee Hazlewood and Michelangelo Antonioli within days of each other, the obituary pages seem almost too packed to take stock the passing of another grand old man.

3. Tommy Dearest - The Tommy Tiernan Interview
If the now-it's-humid, now-it's-lashing business in the outside world is starting to grate, let Tommy Tiernan provide some light relief.

4. The Enemy - We'll Live And Die In These Towns
The new Arctic Monkeys - or are they just a bunch of teens in a strop? With choruses so shouty they make the denizens of Hill 16 seem like a Welsh choir, The Enemy are practically overflowing with that adolescent desire to do get their asses in gear and get the hell out of home. Hear Olaf Tyransen's judgement on the matter.

5. Kid A - Shia LaBeouf Interview
All fired up about Transformers? Jealous about some punk kid getting to play with them on the big screen? Well, have a read of this - he's such a good bloke that you won't even want to feel jealous anymore.

Old New is Good News Department
Feeling a little swamped by the big-budget behemoths which have torn through our screens this summer? Reminding you of being in the same PE class as the school hurling team? Here's a quick run-through on all the big hits of the summer so far.
Transformers
The biggest, brashest and robotest of our summer blockbusters, Transformers is set to stomp all over box offices around the globe. Whet your appetite for destruction here, and then get thee to a cinema - post-haste!
http://www.hotpress.com/features/filmreviews/3926427.html
The Simpsons Movie
Probably the most eagerly-awaited of the bunch, have a read of the review and remember the apprehension you felt when it came out: Would it be sacrelicious or would it be toothless? Would we laugh until we were stupid (like a fox)? Or would Comic Book Guy term it the worst movie ever? An anticipation more painful than the wait for the Leaving Cert results.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Even though the series of books has come to a (rip-roaring) close, the film series is set to run and run. Keep yourself going past the final page with the latest update on Potter's progress - and marvel at Daniel Radcliffe's new-found acting ability!
http://www.hotpress.com/features/filmreviews/3877729.html
Shrek the Third
The third instalment of the Grumpy Green Giant's adventures. Will they get the series back on track, or will it be the case that the best thing about the franchise was the soundtrack to the first one? Only time will tell. Failing that, Tara Brady will.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3 Webpods
If you managed to see the film, stretch the enjoyment a bit further with some delightful extras. If you didn't, well, this'll pique your interest more pique-tastically than a chance sighting of Super Mario on Baggot Street.

GLEN HANSARD ON JAY LENO
**randumpunter:
It was on last night in the States - should be on this side of the water tonight or tomorrow. I think this'll make his head expand even more - but I guess fair play. 'Once' seems to be doing the trick for him over there.
**markf:
You are gay for Glen Hansard.
**randumpunter:
Oh - ya got me!
**markg:
I sure did.
**skennedy:
I was in the US a few weeks ago, and on my day of arrival I opened the USA Today newspaper, and there was a big picture of Glen on the first page I saw, and a promo for Once. Not bad for a Ballymun lad who left school when he was about 15. Might be another film in that.
I miss the threats about eating Frankie from Corrie's gick or eating chips out of Fearne Cotton's kaks.
**randumpunter:
Aw me mouths watering.
*************post of the week: clearly not an avid reader of Hot Press then!**************
**igor:
Who the fuck is Glen Hansard???
*************end post of the week **************
**serpent_in_the_sky:
Best known for his role as Outspan in The Commitments
**muzzlemusic:
He has done well for himself. Not a fan of The Frames, few good sober songs but fair play to him. I lived in Ballymun until I was two. We did live in a penthouse though...
**igor:
He was great in The Commitments...scooting around on his little Suzuki... riding all the Commitmentettes...
