hotpress.com members update: "And how do I marry these widows?"
1 August 2007
Now, we don't want speak too soon because things might look a little different outside your window between us writing the newsletter and you receiving it, but...hooray for the dry weather! Have we caused it to pour down yet???
"All the stars up in the sky and the leaves in the trees,
All the broken bits that make you trip up and greasy bits in between
All that matters in the world is how much I like you"
...was the lyrical teaser of last week. And we'd like to shake dboyle by the hand for getting the answer right - Kate Nash's 'Birds' - but we can't because that email functionality hasn't been invented yet. Damn science!
Try this one for size:
"Hurry up, hurry up and wait
I stay awake all week and still I wait
I got the blues, please come see
What your loving means to me"
C'mon now, it's an easy one. If you don't hit reply right now, shame on you!

Old New is Good News Department
It's a Sopranos spesh this issue - in case you haven't seen the rather striking cover. But it's not the first time they've graced the front of HP. Here's some more Sopranos-related gubbins from way back when, including the 2004 cover story...
Married To The Mob, 2004
Five years after its debut, Paul Nolan traces the show's development from its inauspicious beginnings on HBO to its status as a transatlantic cultural phenomenon, and also examines our enduring fascination with a man called Tony Soprano.

33,000 MILLIONAIRES
**skennedy:
According to a recent report (by Bank of Ireland, I think) there are 33,000 millionaires in this country. Surely this is horse-shit. I know a lot of people in Ireland, and yet I don't know a single millionaire. Am I just hanging with a bad crowd? How many millionaires do you know? (And listing people like Bono and Enya doesn't count.)
**markf:
It is bollocks. If my aul man sold the gaff and his business he'd be a millionaire but if he went to buy another gaff he would no longer be a millionaire. A millionaire in my book is someone that has a million quid in the bank for a rainy day. What you're worth on paper and what you're actually worth (if you know what i mean) are two completly different things. And if there are 33,000 millionaires, then there are 250,000 people in some very real debt.
**stapletoucher:
I'm a millionairess.
**paaul028:
Using the calcualtions they have no doubt used and the ones Mark pointed out three of my closet mates are millionaires. However only one would be a "liquid" millionaire.
**mark_g:
You have three friends still in the closet who are millionaires Paaul028? Surely the money will help their families get over the homophobia and stereotyping.
**paaul028:
D'oh should have been closest.
**paulpd:
An awful lot of that 33,000 is made up of widows etc living in big Georgian redbricks with maybe E50 or E60k in the bank BUT a gaff worth maybe E2M.
**************post of the week: for reaching a new low!*****************
**skennedy:
And how do I marry these widows you speak of?
**************end post of the week*****************
**paulpd:
You go 'round and cut the grass for them and feed the dog and get a few messages in the shop. (Just hope that none of their children catch you at it).
**stilled:
Before we all get too excited; according to Barnardos there are 40,000 children living in consistent poverty. Having one pair of shoes, one warm coat and missing two hot meals a week. Or thereabouts - you get the picture. Very disappointing.
**secrecy_ie:
Any millionaires I know are also tight arsed bastards - but I suppose that's probably why they're millionaires.
**mkiernan:
Actually I believe the 33,000 millionaires does not include 'Housing Wealth' .....that's what I thought I heard...
**cyberbuli:
I doubt that it is 33,000 liquid millionaires. There are thousands of people in Dublin alone with property worth over a million.
**cyberbuli:
...and thousands of farmers outside the cities with farms worth over a million...
**mkiernan:
'Bank of Ireland says that even when the value of principal private residences is excluded, Ireland now has 30,000 millionaires.' Okay...so there ya go...loads of them out and about, I say there are good few where I work...
**************
Know any millionaires or do they not actually exist:
