hotpress.com members update: "The best ending ever"
26 July 2007
Happy Hot Press ezine readers! At this stage the week is half over and it's time for your thoughts to turn towards the weekend. Plus the next issue of of the mighty HP is out today! And (fingers crossed) Charley will be out of the Big Brother house on Friday! And then it's Saturday! Hooray!

Last week's lyrical teaser was a little on the racy side...

"Well she sure is cooking
Cooking for me
But she caught me looking
And her mouth is ready
Ready for me
But she caught me looking"

Did you figure out that it was the sublime 'Lay Down the Law' by the Switches? Well rosena did, but perhaps you'll be the lucky one with this week's lyrical teaser:

"All the stars up in the sky and the leaves in the trees,
All the broken bits that make you trip up and greasy bits in between
All that matters in the world is how much I like you"

If you think you know the answer, hit the reply button asap.

THE LAST SOPRANOS TONIGHT (**WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS**)

**demon:
So the end is near. Take my advice - if you haven't seen it, tape it. Then re-watch the ending, go online and download the closing song from iTunes, then spend the next week reading fanboy theories as to what it all means.

**markf:
Paulie is legend. Phil is dead I reckon. Chase, what a fucking writer. The best ending ever. If you want closure, watch 24.

**igor:
Great ending to a great show... the tension in the Diner Scene each time the door opened was brilliant (and reminiscent of the restaurant scene in Godfather) .

**jenwhite:
I thought the telly was broken. I was highly disappointed with the ending.

**tricky:
It was a fantastic ending, brave and bold. And hey, if Chase & Gandolfini have busts for their next projects they can always make a movie.

****************post of the week: igor makes the case for cat actors****************

**igor:
The cat last night was a good actor. Must be hard being a feline in the acting business...you know typecasting and all that.

****************end post of the week*************************************************

**rp.mcmurphy:
The onion rings a symbol for holy communion?? Genius.

**demon:
The truth is Tony doesn't die in the end. He was alive when it ended ergo he is alive. People who are disappointed with the ending are the same people who watched the show on DVD and are watching three episodes at a time. They seem to think lots of shit happens in the show all the time, forgetting that there are often scenes where tony is just watching the History Channel.

**adharic:
He dies alright... from the first scene to the last there's obvious visual references.
http://www.bobharris.com/content/view/1406/1/

**demon:
Except that he's alive at the end of the show. Chase has always made it obvious if a scene is meant to be a dream.

**adhairc:
I take the black screen and silence to be Tony's first-person-perspective when the bullet hits him. "When it comes you probably don't even hear it, right?". It's a genius ending either way. As long as it doesn't come back, which I seriously doubt. As Chase himself said: "Watch it, it's all there". I don't think he wanted there to be any ambiguity about it.

**snapshot:
My favourite theory is that the viewer is the shooting victim. Like adhairc said, when the end comes you know nothing about it - and all that time invested with your mafia friends really amounts to nothing.

**sweet_oblivion:
Best scene of the night was Paulie Walnuts sitting alone about Satriales, last man standing.

**markf:
There is no way David Chase would kill his audience. Silly theory that.

**stilled:
I sat on my sofa...stunned. And then a smile formed. And it's been along time since television made that happen.

Have you got theories of your own to add?
