Good day to you fair ezine readers and thank you so much for letting us take temporary residence in your inbox, especially when we're sure it's brimful of group emails from friends who don't really have anything useful to add to the Friday night plan, MySpace Friend Requests and people imploring you to 'Make her worship you'. Cripes.
"Baby do you cry with laughter?
Or are you cracking up?
Baby did I leave you in stitches?
Splitting at the sides?"
...was last week's lyrical teaser. Did you guess it was Charlotte Hatherley's 'I Want You To Know' like kevin.grogan? If you did, you're allowed to go around feeling slightly smug for the next half hour. Then the slate's clean and you must work this one out:
"Well she sure is cooking
Cooking for me
But she caught me looking
And her mouth is ready
Ready for me
But she caught me looking"
Ooooh my! Who are these racy devils? Hit reply if you know...

Old News Is Good News Department
Hang on to your hats, folks - there's a Mercury Music Prize-not-ignoring-Ireland shocker! After years of a UK-only cast, there's finally a Irish native in the nomination line-up - Fionn Regan. To celebrate this rarity, let's take a look at archive articles of the winners in years gone by.
2006 - Arctic Monkeys: Five Minutes With... review
Back when they were lads (oh wait, they still are...) and 'Arctic Monkeys' was but two words stuck together, Phil Udell dusted off his A&R hat and recognised the talent in the Sheffield band from the off. He gives 'Five Minutes With...' single of the week and says these nice things:

2005 - Antony & The Johnsons: Peter Murphy pays tribute
At the end of 2005, clearly The Year Of The Antony, Peter Murphy nods his head to the man who is capable of "expressing intense emotion in a manner so pure and natural it suggests supreme lack of effort."

2004 - Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand interview
They're in their in-between album stage but there's no rest for the wicked - they're busy on the live front, as they tell Peter Murphy at Oxegen 2004.

2003 - Dizzee Rascal
Dizzee Rascal's gig at The Village, Dublin, didn't go down too well with our reviewer...

UNDER-RATED GUITARISTS...
**paulpd:
Was browsing YouTube last night (mainly old Manics stuff) and I reckon James Dean Bradfield is seriously under-rated.
**robbiebrennan:
George Harrison
Phil Manzanera - Roxy Music
Willie Nelson
Brian Setzer - Stray Cats
Robby Kreiger - The Doors
Andy Summers - The Police
Can I include myself in this list?
**paulpd:
I'm talking about those with serious talent who try to avoid the limelight! I'm sure you're highly under-rated too...
**markf:
robbie - How can you make a list like that when 80% of them are known legends in music, that are rated. George Harrison is one of the best guitar players of all time, I hate when people say he's under-rated when he's clearly not.
This is a broad thread. Do people class a fantastic guitar player as someone that plays wanky lead all day like Slash?
Anyway, Prince and John Squire are my two favourite guitarists of all time.
I'm sure they aren't classed as under-rated though.
**evil_giraffe:
I'd bet that there are session musicians that we've never heard of that'd blow most recognisable guitarists out of the water.
Matt Bellamy from Muse is a guy you never see on any lists... he's also an excellent pianist in my uneducated opinion.
**strangelove:
I agree about James Dean Bradfield. He's an amazing guitarist and his talent hasn't waned, he can still play all the fast solos of old and threw some cool new ones onto their new album.
**mark_g:
Bellamy is a better pianist then guitarist. With the six-strings, he lives in the shadows of the Edge and Jonny Greenwood, offering little in terms of innovation.
**************post of the week: niallo puts the record straight on George Harrison's contribution to the Beatles ****************
**nialllo:
Harrison never gets put in any list of the top five or even top ten guitarists of all time.
He is widely recognised of course, purely because he was in The Beatles and they have so many famous songs. But he doesn't get much credit for his guitar work on them as most people focus on the Lennon/McCartney songwriting. His guitar work was an essential part of the Beatles sound.
Having said that, McCartney was supposed to be a better guitar player than him and played a few solos that Harrison couldn't get down.
**************end post of the week*********************************************
**muzzlemusic:
"Bellamy... lives in the shadows of the Edge and Jonny Greenwood, offering little in terms of innovation."
BOLLOX! I did have my argument typed out but quite simply I think The Edge is completely over rated. In every way Matt is superior to the Edge.
I am not some huge Muse fan defending them and like or dislike either band the same, but that guy is inspiring.
I won't comment on Johnny Greenwood because I think Radiohead are amazing and piss on everyone else.
**sweet_oblivion:
Pete Green anyone?
**markf:
Peter Green??!! Probably one of the best blues guitarists ever??!!
Under-rated??!!! I'm going to step away from this thread, it should be re-named: "Guitarists that aren't known as the best guitarists of all time by crappy music mag polls."
**evil_giraffe:
Rodrigo y Gabriela should be more successful than they are... but again like the session musicians maybe there are guys playing pubs in Mexico that'd put them to shame.

Do you think any of your guitar heroes haven't got their dues?
