hotpress.com members update: "Why don't kids wave at planes any more?"
13 June 2007

Hello there friends. We've stopped stuffing ourselves with birthday cake long enough to bring you this week's marvelous ezine. I say stuffing, I mean nibbling politely. But there is lots of cake. After all, we're 30 this week! Of course you'd never know it from our youthful appearance... moving on:

"Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staffroom
The accusations fly"

...was last week's '80s-throwback lyrical teaser. What was it? Why Mr. Sting of course! Or rather, The Police with 'Don't Stand So Close To Me,' as guessed by brando Now, not so much of a throwback as a modern-day wonder...

"Hard-wired to conceive,
So much we'd have to stow it
Even needs have needs,
Tiny giants made of tinier giants"

Whoever could that be? We're not giving any hints... hit reply if you know it!

NEW ISSUE - OUT TOMORROW: Special 30th Birthday Issue

This week is our fantastical bumper birthday issue. Hot Press has been running for 30 years now and we're celebrating in style. We invited the Irish elite around for cake and champers, and cover stars U2, Shane McGowan, Sinead O'Connor, Tommy Tiernan, Christy Moore and Damien Dempsey were good enough to RSVP. In fact, we had so much fun we decided to spread it out over two covers!
Inside, we have some famous friends talk us through their highlights of the last 30 years. The Edge, David Gray, Damien Dempsey and Bryan Ferry reel in the years along with Rough Trade supremo Geoff Travis.
Hot Press writers old and new review the '70s, '80s and '90s: ex Hotpress-er Arthur Matthews talks about creating Father Ted; Paul Nolan looks at the most controversial moments in rock history since 1977; and Tara Brady talks us through 30 years of film.
We also ask Bell X1 your questions in a Mixed Grill and talk to Martin McGuinness about his part in Northern politics.
Our birthday issue is also bursting at the seems with news, reviews and exclusive offers.

How's that for jam-packed?! (Like our lovely sponge cake.)

Yours to treasure for another three decades, for just €3.50.

Old News Is Good News Department

In our new issue we look back over everything in music, film and literature from 1977-2007. But how did we celebrate our other birthdays? Have a gander here:

Sinead O'Connor Interview, 1986
A 19-year-old Sinead talks about moving to London and getting her head shaved by an Italian barber. She also enthuses about her debut album, and gives her teenage views on religion, sex and marriage.
http://www.hotpress.com/425911.html

Christy Moore Interview, 1987
Bill Graham talks to Christy Moore about how the Irish audience is his priority, even if he does release material in the states. He also tells Bill how he offended militant feminists and explains why performing is his life blood.
http://www.hotpress.com/425888.html

U2 live review, 1987
It's a double home-coming as U2 return from their odyssey 'round the globe to bring The Joshua Tree tour to their fanatical Irish supporters in Dublin and Cork.

Andrea Corr Interview, 2002
In 2002 Hot Press celebrated our 25th birthday. Andrea Corr talked to us about where she was in 1977 (at two years old), and what she's done since then. Growing up in the poverty-stricken Dundalk of the '80s, she explains how her upbringing led her and her siblings to start a band in their teens.

Our Favourite Postings From The Dank Bathroom Wall / Personal Advert Column / Huge Throbbing Collective Brain That Is The World Famous hotpress.com Messageboard...

SPACE [and random interruptions about rock music on TV]

*stilled:
At 23.59 tonight the international space station will be passing over Ireland. Go outside and wave.
The space shuttle Atlantis is being launched at 00.38 and its trajectory will take it over Ireland about half an hour later by which time the main fuel tank should be detaching. Go outside and wave.
That is all.

**replika:
The space station passes over Ireland fairly regularly... nothing special about that.
However, if you find a space shuttle fuel tank has landed in your garden you can make a mint by selling it back to them. Or by sueing them for ruining your lawn...

**tornaxx:
But a lot of the times that is passes, we're too be-clouded...

**stilled:
Just saw it. Me neighbours came out too.
Shuttle is holding at t-9. No go cos of dodgy weather over a couple of their emergency landing sites. Paul McCartney rocked.

**************post of the week: for bringing the wonder back to space travel****************

**stilled:
Shuttle away safely. 0 to 6000mph in 3 minutes. 18000mph in 7 minutes. Wheeeeeee.

**************end post of the week****************

**stilled:
So did Editors. I've never heard them before.

**stilled:
Phew-just realised that it can cross the Atlantic in a quarter of an hour, so that's ten TO one rather than ten after. Waved me arms off much to the confusion of the cats.
Bjork was forgettable.

**tornaxx:
Was she? I forget...
(I only saw parts of the programme.)

**muzzlemusic:
"the nightwatch man" was even more forgettable..
editors were great thought
did see the station, was moving quit fast

**cyberbuli:
Didn't see either: we don't have BBC and anyway I was in the pub until 12.30.

**evil_giraffe:
"Nothing special about it"
It's mans greatest achievement!!!

**replika:
I didn't say there was nothing special about the space station itself, just that there's nothing special about it flying over Ireland on this particular occasion because it passes overhead all the time...

**evil_giraffe:
Yeah well we should all stand out gaping in awe at it every time it passes.
Why don't kids wave at planes any more?

**raycongo:
I'd be happy to continue waving at planes, but I got rightly niffed when the passengers never waved back.
How rude. I blame their parents

**tornaxx:
I remember when we used to wave to Santy as he flew by in helicopters. He was in every helicopter that passed by. I don't know why...

**stilled:
Don't get me started on that Santy bastard.

**stilled:
Speaking of wondrous creations (the shuttle, the ISS and Santy)- Mark E Smith responded personally to a question that I posted on The Falls' website. I thought that I'd long passed the stage where I could get giddy about such things but.............I'm not.
Oh how can I reply?

**cyberbuli:
You could say:
'thanks a lot-ah
you're my favourite rock star-ah'
I don't think that Mr Smith would take too kindly to being slagged, though. Saw him an odd time when I lived in Prestwich. Sullen divil.

**tornaxx:
Stilled, have you heard his latest project, Von Sudenfed? It's a collaboration with Mouse On Mars, called Tromatic Reflexxions. I've just ordered it. I hope it's out of this world (just getting back to the original intention of the thread.) ;)

**stilled:
Yes tornaxx-it was a question about the Von Sudenfeld album that he responded to. I've ordered it from cdwow. Are they dead now? They took me money no problem.
I've decided to make the coming week a holiday. No work til Tue 19th.
Hooray.

**stilled:
Anybody else see the Seven Ages of Rock documentary on heavy metal?
NO MOTORHEAD!!!!!!! What the fuck was that about?
Charles Shaar Murray was credited with being the consultant for these programmes. Lemmy must have shat in Mr Murrays cornflakes at some point.
It's been an awful series so far. Stadium rock next week.
