Katie Taylor

She's a phenomenon, and no mistake – a real boxer who could give any man a run for his money. Which is fantastic. But here's an interesting thought. Might watching her scrap so effectively in any way legitimatise brawling among omen?

Fantastic, well done to her. Brilliant stuff.
I haven't got this emotional at an Irish sporting event since Gary Breen scored for Ireland in the 61st minute in the World Cup game against Saudi Arabia.

Ah lads, she really deserves all the credit and glory. It was a long time coming. I think the nation needed the moment to forget their worries... and of course the Royal family up in the audience amid the sparkly tri coloured faces... she's ours chaps!

Also, I reckon the female boxing is the only female event in the olympics where the bitching isn't rife.. I'd say the gymnasts in particular are fierce behind the scenes.

Does nobody else feel a bit guilty for ignoring her for so long?
Fair play to her for working her arse off with little or no encouragement from the rest of us.
I'd doubt if she minds if tens of thousands of people dress up like leprechauns and sing that feckin' song in her honour....but I'd feel like a fraud.
Maybe I should just post her money or something.

Also, I find her more attractive now than I did before I'd seen her (literally) beat the snot out of a load of other women.
What's that about?

While it might not be rife, didn't Katie Taylor's opponent yesterday say a lot of dodgy things about her on Twitter or one of those other internet yokes?

| I hope Tubridy at least lets her sit down when he has her on the show next rather than just meeting her at the ap and patronizing her! Best comment I heard yesterday, and it was in jest, was in the gym last night 'and she's not even Catholic!!!'

| That she is attractive has never been in doubt. Can't really understand why it took people in Ireland so long to cotton on to her - except that there is a prejudice against women's boxing. Which brings me back to that first post. Has this legitimatised the idea of women having a physical go at one another? And if not, why hot?

"And if not, why hot?" I presume that wasn't a Freudian slip...

| No, it was a simple digital error! The 'h' is just above the 'n' on the keyboard... And a failure to take the time to re-read the post!

I've been badgering y'all for ages to support this girl. She was like a ghost in Irish media. A complete sham when she deserved so much credit for being world champ, what... 4 times over?
Er, Maedbh, I don't get the 'she's not even a catholic' joke...
Best tweet/facebook post I saw was- "Really Katie? you could have said all your training and effort paid off, but no. Twas the the prayers. Glad to hear that the Lord himself loves you more than the Russian."

That's the one thing that I don't buy about Katie. If God loved everyone equally, then surely nobody would win anything.
And when you say thanks to your alleged God, for helping you win, then surely that's claiming a special relationship with him that others don't have.
I do think the fact that she believes may give her an inner composure that is a help when the chips are down - but that would be the case even if the God in which she believes was a figment of her imagination... I don't mean that to sound disrespectful at all, by the way.

You do sound disrespectful.
My favourite tweet was: "If Bray was an independent nation it would now by 56th on the medal table, ahead of Protugal, Turkey, and former colonial oppressors Ireland"

Paddy Barnes is great gas on twitter too. He tweeted this an hour ago:
"Journey ends here, thanks for all the support people, Zou Shimming if you are reading this LEAVE ME ALONE!#devastated"

Evil, if it be so, one might follow your observation with the old Irish saying –
