opportunism by the powers that be to show "we mean business" and get our minds off the fact that 18 months in to the government we're still fucked or actual genuine attempt to prosecute the guys who fucked us in the first place?

The former I think.

It seems like everytime they've brought him in they try to make it as dramatic looking as possible so as to attempt to save face in the public eye. I'd say their only regret is that they couldn't get a shot of him in handcuffs.

Practically speaking there is fuck all they can really do. I understand that he always kept the regulator of the time reasonably up to speed with his plans, which would make it difficult to put it across as fraud - regardless of whether it is or not.

There is the element of show trial about it.

Mind you, the same might be said of the decision to charge Rebekah Brooks in the UK, in relation to phone hacking. There is an element of 'how the mighty have fallen' in the air, and no mistake.

'Jail the developers and spank the bankers' seems to be the plan. But that is like jailing fat people and spanking fast food restaurants for giving them so much cheap food. Not a gret analogy but you see the problem there. The banks were not regulated properly by the last government and that is the root cause of the bust. We are just looking for scapegoats now.

I'm not really sure much purpose is served by the whole thing. Someone else made the point we'll probably spend a small fortune on a case only for a deal to be done at the 11th hour where he pleads guilty to a lesser crime in return for a non-custodial sentance.

i think it's time to shoot them all and let god figure it out. Fitzpatrick and Michael Fingleton are at the top of the list...

Rough justice, eh! Would advise not being the one to pull the trigger...

Stranger things have happened! But still - I'd let due process take its course...
