| Good discussion on Off The Ball about this during the week. Dundalk is a great football town There is no comparison with Monaghan in that regard. The set-up there is good, but there seem to be some strange aspects to lease and ownership arrangements that might make it less worthwhile to invest. But it would be a disaster if they were to go down...

another casualty of a stupid 10/12 team league with teams playing each other every second week.
One 18 team League playing each other twice.

one top tier of say 16 teams and regional leagues below, which would allow the likes of Tralee, Carlow, cobh to join the league pyramid and build up there clubs without huge travel expenses and journeys like cobh going up to finn harps etc. I think a 16 team league would be best and 2/3 regional leagues. There would be shit games in a 16 team league as there are in every league but teams would be playing each other less often so there would be more riding on each game and also bigger build up to derby games etc
Possible 16 team Prem
1.Rovers 2.Sligo 3.Pats 4.Bohs 5.Derry 6.Cork 7.Shels 8.Limerick 9.Waterford 10.Galway 11.Dundalk 12. Drogs 13.Longford 14.Bray 15.Finn Harps 16.Athlone

There is something worse - a 10/12 league with teams playing each other every 2nd month either 4 times or an unbalanced three times which leads to a mess.
More of a sense of occasions when teams meet twice only ,in a tiny league normally ( not where teams are " expunged) most teams are in fear of relegation which leads to sterile football and journeymen, without relegation more young players would be introduced by smaller teams benefiting the whole league in the long term & a finacial reward could be given to each position.
After a year or so the smaller clubs would get better with experience thus the whole league would be better, with bigger crowds too, its a no brainer - has been for years.

I think 16 sounds about right. The 16 cited by Sweet Oblivion actually feels like a top tier.
I'm sure you could work out a system where clubs had to hit certain targets to guarantee staying in the league, and other teams would be free to apply. In years where a team or two failed to hit the targets – which could include points, wins, goals, attendances or whatever – then if a strong enough application was received a form of relegation would take place.

| 16 team league will never work. Even more meaningless mid-table games. Irish people have proven themselves to be barely interested even when their teams are doing well (e.g. Dunndalk/Monaghon). Half the league would have asterix' next to them for point deducted and the like. Damn shame tho...

I have to say I've NEVER been to a league of ireland game. I blame myself and apathy for it, but i'm actually embarrassed know that I say it. I'm trying to think what would have got me bitten with the live football bug. Not being wise after the fact, but I think they did a pretty crap job of making games attracitve to go to back when I was a teenager in the 90s. I'd no family history of even being particularly into football, so when I started being into it I was just sucked into the SKY nexus. A few years ago I felt ok about the shite stadiums excuse, but in fairness Rovers have buried that. So for the record, give me a game in the next 3 weeks to go to and be turned on by.

| speaking of which, grim news for Lithuania last night were Rovers failed to do the business. Lithuania are right around us in the country coefficient standings so it's a game the league them needed to win. Next year we lose the benefit of Pat's great run in 2008 and we'll slide RIGHT down, sliding down means harder ties again to get through to 2nd rounds and the chances of a team repeating Rovers' feat of last year receding hugely.

So how long is Stephen Kenny going to last?
That defeat is a disaster, heaped on a crisis...

Kenny is half a season into a three year contract, it will cost to get rid. I never liked him for the job, he always seemed to crumble when expectations are high. Our defense is atrocious this year leaking easy goals, being caught out of position, bad organisation and whole team look less fit then under O'Neill. Some of the players he brought in are yesterdays men Gartland, Brennan, Hawkins, Powell(although still young hasent done it in two years). That full back Gilbert wouldnt get his game for a LSL team, thank Christ Sully is back. Two inexperienced goalkeepers. The list goes on! So many mistakes being made its just horrible to watch. Dominating possession but no penetration, Bray could of easily beat us on friday with the few chances they had and it was the same story last night an average side took their chances and won. Fair play to them they go on to play Anderlech now and a nice little pay day. Fingers crossed Kenny get the boot but I wouldnt hold my breath. Would love Jim Magilton back as manager this time or even Liam Buckley who's sides play great football

| because Pats have absolutely NO money and even some of their best players are on amateur contracts so there's no way in which they'll recoup anything from them, including Christopher Forrester if memory serves me right.
