Ireland, craft beers, microbrews and the mega-beer-corporations.
|
Ireland is a great country for the aul' beer.
Bullshit.
I was in a liquor store in Connecticut recently, and it really struck me how much choice was available. The amount of beer available from the major brands right down to brands manufactured by 2 blokes in a shed appeared to the available. I was in a local Dublin off-license some time ago, and I simply could not buy a quality Belgian or English ale. There was a small selection of non-standard brews, but it was tucked away in the corner. I couldn't even buy a Galway Hooker or a (Dungarvan-made) Copper Coast Red Ale.
Are we deluding ourselves about Ireland? Do the major corporations have the market sewn up. That said, I think we're a nation of uncouth alcos anyway, and the fact that we'll drink any aul' shite is probably proof of it.

| there's LOADS of different beers available in ireland now, sure you mightn't get them in the big "by the tray" bays in a supermarket but go into any decent independent off license and they'll have some of the stuff from the microbreweries.

sorry snap, re read your post to see you said dublin off-license. well it obviously wasn't a good one. The likes of Redmonds in Ranelagh always have a wide variety & even though O'Briens specialise in Wine they've a decent selection too.

| Actually, I meant to ask that question too - where can I get a decent choice in Dublin? I'll definitely check out those places.

Redmonds are definitely very good. O'Briens don't do a huge amount of Irish but do do a decent 'unusual brand' range.
I don't drink beer much though so I'm not a great one to ask.

| A friend, who was trying to convince me that beer could be as nice and as interesting as wine – never! – told me there's a great place in Rathgar called The Vintry that has a phenomenal number of specialist and artisan beers. Not a big beer fan myself but that'd be worth checking out...

The Vintry in Rathgar is a good 'un. Havent been in there for a while.
Seemingly there's an "offo" in Stoneybatter that sells Buenos Aires' finest Quilmes. I've been assured it's phenomenal. Anyone ever had it? Dunnes Stores is starting to stock Estrella Damm now I see. 4 bottles for €8 - go the right bars in Barcelona and you can find it for €0.50 a bottle during happy hour. A lovely beer though. But can anyone help me locate 2 Belgian beers. One called Jupiler, the other called Orval in a Dublin offo, do let us know?

was in Redmonds the other night - and while their Irish range was definitely pretty good - not totally comprehensive but good. I copied and pasted this from their website and they definitely have all of them, if not a couple more.
