Nighthawks at the Guinness Storehouse - July 21st
Nighthawks at the Guinness Storehouse
(as part of the Liberties Festival 2012)

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

Vyvienne Long

Vyvienne Long is a superb cellist and a talented singer-songwriter who first came to prominence on the Irish music scene when she worked with Damien Rice on his albums O and 9. In 2006, Vyvienne released her own debut EP, entitled Birdtalk. It was a huge success and completely sold out within months. In 2010, Vyvienne reached a whole new audience when she released her excellent debut album, entitled Caterpillar Sarabande, and appeared on television shows such as The Late Late Show, Other Voices and The View. Vyvienne’s live performances are always something special, and we can’t wait to welcome her back to Nighthawks on July 21st. Here is some footage of Vyvienne covering N.E.R.D. on RTE’s Other Voices – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1L9R5W3Cs0 – and here she is playing ‘Bad Move’ on The View – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGD61Ksjnn8&feature=fvwrel.

Kevin Barry

In the last five years Kevin Barry has become a major force in Irish literature. The man is simply unstoppable. Kevin is the author of the story collections Dark Lies The Island and There Are Little Kingdoms, and the novel City Of Bohane. He has recently won the Sunday Times EFG Short Story Prize and has also been awarded the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature. Kevin has also been shortlisted for the Costa First Novel Prize and the Hughes & Hughes Irish Novel of the Year, and it wouldn’t surprise us if he popped up at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev on July 1st and scored the winning goal in the Euro 2012 Final. Yep – he’s on that sort of a roll at the moment. So catch him now at Nighthawks before the Nobel Committee give him a call.

Little Xs For Eyes

Little Xs For Eyes are without doubt one of our favourite Irish bands, and we are delighted to have them on the line-up for the Storehouse. Their debut album, S.A.D., was released a few months ago to excellent reviews. RTE’s Dan Hegerty called it “one of the best debuts of the year” and State Magazine wrote – “the execution is perfect, a crystal clear combination of twinkling instruments and beautifully balanced vocals. S.A.D. is a record of real substance.” Little Xs For Eyes have just released a new double A-side single – ‘Somewhere with a Dancefloor’ / ‘Summer Never Comes’ – and it comes with yet another fantastic new video from the band - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR_ga8W3AcI. Oh, and it can be downloaded for free right here - http://littlexsforeyes.bandcamp.com/.

Jarlath Regan

Jarlath Regan is a funny man. A very funny man. A few years ago he gave up his job as an advertising account executive and tried his hand at stand-up comedy, and within a few months he found himself in the final of the BBC and Channel 4 new comedy awards. Since then Jarlath has gone from strength to strength and toured his comedy all over the world – everywhere from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to Montreal’s Just for Laughs. Jarlath’s TV work has included regular appearances on RTE’s The Panel and Craig Doyle Live, and he recently appeared on BBC TV on Russell Howard’s Good News. Take a look at this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4mDlbHsJk0. And check out his website www.jigser.com.

Fiach

Fiach Moriarty, known simply as Fiach, was born and bred in the Liberties and is as Dublin as a bowl of coddle on Hill 16. (Apologies for the dodgy simile!) Fiach is also a very gifted songwriter who has honed his craft; and his debut album, So I, released in 2010, was deservedly made Album of the Week on RTE Radio 1. In the last couple of years Fiach has gone on the road playing support to artists such as Ray Davies (The Kinks) and Declan O'Rourke, as well as accompanying Eddi Reader on The Late Late Show. Fiach recently headlined a sold out show on the main stage in Whelan’s, and we’re delighted to have him back at Nighthawks at the Storehouse this July. He is currently recording his second album, provisionally titled The Last Romance, and it is due for release later this year. Here is Fiach’s ‘Lullaby’- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD65CjW_P5A. Yes – it was filmed backwards.

Pearse McGloughlin and Nocturnes

Pearse McGloughlin released his debut album, Busy Whisper, in 2009, and it wasn’t long before music critics began to take note of his talent, including a thumbs up from Jim Carroll in the Irish Times (“soft focused tunes delivered with quietly assured authority”). In 2010, Pearse followed up his album with an extraordinary four track release, entitled Twine, which really has to rank as one of the best Irish EPs ever. And the really good news now is that Pearse McGloughlin and Nocturnes have just released a second album, entitled In Movement, and it’s a cracker. It has already received glowing comparisons to Bon Iver and can be purchased right here – http://pearsemcgloughlin.bandcamp.com/. And here’s “an oldie, but a goodie” from Pearse’s debut album. The song is called ‘Ways to Kill a Werewolf’ and it won an IMTV award for Best Male Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MODLCJsfUsA.

Willie White

Willie White stole the show on Des Bishop's Joy In Da Hood on RTE TV a few years ago, and since then he has taken the Irish comedy scene by storm with his razor-sharp material and brilliant comic timing. Willie is now a regular headline act at the Laughter Lounge in Dublin, and has also performed at Vicar Street, Kilkenny Cat Laughs, Electric Picnic, and every other major comedy gig in the country. On top of that, Willie’s TV work includes Republic of Telly and The Savage Eye. That’s one hell of a CV for a man who has only been doing stand-up comedy for a few years. We can’t wait to see his set at the Storehouse on July 21st.

Colm Keegan

Colm Keegan is without doubt one of the main reasons that performance poetry has enjoyed such a big revival in Dublin city in recent years. He is a poet who speaks truthfully about modern Ireland and instinctively knows how to grab the attention of any audience. Colm has been nominated four times for the Hennessy X.O. Literary Awards and is a former All-Ireland Poetry Slam Champion. His debut collection of poetry, entitled Don’t Go There, has just been published by Salmon, and it can be purchased right here (and check out the nifty sound files too) - http://www.salmonpoetry.com/details.php?ID=258&a=219. And here is a recent RTE documentary in which Colm reflects upon his childhood growing up in the Ballymun flats - http://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/documentary-podcast-ballym un-batman-pyjamas-poet-colm-keegan.html.

Ellie McMahon

Ellie McMahon has one of the most interesting singing voices that we’ve heard in quite some time and we are really delighted to have her on the line-up for the Storehouse on July 21st. Ellie is currently studying at the British Institute of Modern Music and is definitely a young talent well worth keeping a close eye on. She has something very special. Ellie will be accompanied on guitar at Nighthawks by Conor McMahon.

One day I will stop being lazy and learn how to make the web links active on the messageboard.

But there are lots of links there, so I'd probably be lazy anyway...

that's some extravaganza SK.

Thank you, sir. We sold out the Storehouse last year (which is big for us), so hopefully there is enough value for money there to sell it out again. I mean €17.50 for 9 good acts and some free grub (well canapes) isn't bad going. And the Guinness up there is pretty good.
