Monaghan United R.I.P
|
http://extratime.ie/newsdesk/articles/8322/monaghan-united-w ithdraw-from-league/
A real shame to see a club drop out out the league halfway throught the season and they had made real progress over the last few seasons. But lack of support and sponsorship mean they go the way of Kildare County and Kilkenny City and fold.

| actually i think in fairness shane coleman actually meant to say former league of ireland footballer and league of ireland manager, as at the end he said, "I remember you knocking in a few at Oriel Park for Dundalk" which cooled the Rodster's ire.

| a celtic league is a non runenr as scottish clubs wouldnt be in to it and without approval from UEFA you would be banned from international football.

| If you could come up with enough money the scottish clubs would be into it. They only get €16 million from sky for the tv rights.

Is there any good reason why we could not have an all-ireland league, and by extension an all-Ireland team, given the peaceful state of Norn Iron now? Still too many bigotted proddies following the nordie teams?
Well, if we can have an all-ireland rugby team, hockey team etc. what does it say about soccer if it is not possible to have an all-ireland soccer team?

Yes there probably are with an All Ireland Team meaning under UEFA rules there would have to be an All Ireland league which a lot of clubs in Northern Ireland wouldnt want.
The IFA and FAI would have to be merged and the likes of Delaney with his big fat wages wouldnt be interested while THE IFA would also lose their rights to vote on the games rules which Scotland , england wales and NI have along with FIFA, so it is a bit more complicated than it seems.
Still nothing is impossible

in relation to the associations. There's two issues 1) Northern Ireland's IFA by virtue of being one of the 4 "Home Nations" has an equal vote worth 12.5% of the Football Rules Board (each 'home nation' has 12.5% and FIFA's 4 designated members have 12.5% each). You need 6 out of 8 (75%) to get an rule passed meaning that they've a status FAR in excess of their standing. 2) The FAI has a large structure in place and would definitely see itself as naturally the dominant party in any merger. The likes of John Delaney's salary does come into this.
But, if FW De Klerk can release Nelson Mandela for the good of the world, surely the IFA and FAI can reach an intelligent compromise.

Delaney does come in to this as he would not like his job merged with a NI version of him.
There are other issues too , a lo of Northern Unionists might not want to play in an All Ireland team , then you have positions like Manager etc who might be swallowed up by the bigger Association.
it would take a lead in of at least 4 years if it were ever to happen and doesnt look like happening any time soon, the bad blood between the two associatons from Ancient history and most recently over the poaching of players from the good friday agreement doesnt help either.

| Poaching is a loaded word. The guys want to play for Ireland, not for a failed statelet. I hope you haven't got a problem with that!

| if we get to do a united Ireland football team, I propose that we have You Raise Me Up as the anthem rather then Ireland's call

| It's not poaching. It is allowing people to express their identity by playing for the team that represents their nationality. James McClean doesn't want to play for the Six Counties. It's as simple as that...
