I'm a Liverpool fan but yes its time for some realism. The current squad and current league position is miles away from where it needs to be to challenge for the title, and with such an expectant fan base, why would a top class manager go near the job.
I think most practical approach was always to go get an up and coming manager which I think Rodgers is. Word on the street is that they are looking to bring Van Gaal in as Director of football.
That would suprise me for the same reasons listed above.
I do think though that with the addition of a couple of good buys (preferably not with massive price tags to live up to) that Liverpool should reaslistically be able to finish in the top 4.

| If someone had mentioned the name Brendan Rodgers to me last week, I would have assumed he was a Country n' Irish singer from Monaghan. Who the fuck is he?

Realistically Man City, Man U and it seems Chelsea are going to be able to trump whatever investment is left for Liverpool which leaves them fighting for 4th with Arsenal and Spurs(if they improve a lot, otherwise it's a fight with them Newcastle and Everton for 5-7). I think it was announced the budget for the summer is 30 million - nowhere near enough to lure an A list manager so probably the right call to go for the up and coming Rodgers. Read earlier on the BBC website that it's likely now that it's him that there won't be a Director of Football so maybe that was a precondition for him taking the job? Hope whatever happens that he's given some time.

Perfect choice far better than Martinez and Benitez who tried and failed and blew a ton of money in the process.
Looks like Man City, Utd and Chelsea will be in a different league moneywise in the short term as Plantini`s fair play strategy seems to have no backbone.
With a mediocre current squad and not much money compared to the other three if rodgers could even challenge for a 4th spot with the likes of Arsenal, spurs and indeed Newcastle it would be a big step forward, especially playing attacking football.
Long term Liverpool need a new or improved stadium to compete on an even keel.
Rodgers looks like a smooth operator , a lot could depend on how good a start he gets off to in his first 6 months.
If i were him i`d cash in on the vastly overated reina in goal and glen johnson who can attack but cant defend and is injury prone as well as offloading enrique, adam and the woeful Downing and spearing, you would probably get 40 million or so for them alone enough for 3 better players replacing them if you have an eye for a bargain.
No one can say for certain how a new Manager will do at a club but he deserves his chance and I hope he takes it.

| Is it definite? If so, it's a good appointment. He's done a fantastic job at Swansea playing a really attractive brand of modern football. Only question is: will he be able to handle the bigger egos in the Liverpool set-up? That is a different sort of test of a manger...

It's a gamble though and at £5 million it's got an added kicker.
I'll be intrigued to see how it spins out though.
Isn't hilarious though how Andy Carroll is now England's No 9 having been shite all season?

Might be nice for him to bring Vorm from Swansea - he's some keeper. And if we can nap Sigursson that might be all we need.
Aquilini might well be part of Rodger's plans - as he would work well in his system.

Great signing. I'm well happy. Hope he brings Sigurdsson with him.

Surely it'd be more honourable not to poach players from your former club!
Is this the most high profile job ever for an Irish manager in the Premiership? I suspect it might be.
