I think it will be a fairly tyipcal irish affair. We'll lose the perceived "easiest one" against Croatia, probably get a draw against Spain and then beat Italy.

Whatever happens, its great to have involvement in a major tournament again.

Am I the only one who finds this team absolutely and completely uninspiring? I fear a series of hidings. I generally can't bear to watch them play.

But, as said above, it IS great to be back in tournament football, and if we start doing a Greece I'm sure I'll change my tune.

I think they are pretty uninspiring also to be fair - but without wanting to sound cliched - I think they might be hard to beat.

We could be in for disappointment though - it definitely is the weakest squad we've gone to a major championship with to date.

The Euro 88 squad for example, would have had 7 first team players from the top 4 teams in the English 1st division while the WC 1990 squad had 7 also.

I know the premier league is a different beast nowadays with lots more foreign influence, but none of our players from this squad are at top flight clubs at the moment.

richp - that's the thing though, in 1988 the only international playing in england apart from English/Irish/Scottish/Welsh were probably Arnold Muhren and Jesper Olsen. Therefore the top 4 clubs were getting players from a much narrower pool

I'm saying this team is as good as that, but I think the differences are overplayed. For example, Chris Morris wouldn't get near this team.

If we can get out of this group.....anything is possible.

As Greece proved back in 04.

Listen, we got a tough group, but we missed the group of death with Germany, Holland and Portugal. So we should count our blessings.

Spain are the best team in the competition but Trap will fancy his chances of containing them. Both Croatia and Italy are beatable – and one win may be enough if we are generally tight and Spain do their stuff elsewhere. it'll be fascinating, but we have to have a very good chance of coming out of the group...

The 1988 English league was a very good one - even though the European ban on clubs was still in place and they had very few Top European players, same as 1990 too where England reached the semi finals of the world cup and were unlucky to lose on penos.

I was over in Germany in 88 which was a great experience, like one of the previous posters I can`t get excited about this team ,Manager and style of football at all. He can`t even be bothered to learn the language and his inclusion of some players like mcshane is baffling but the football is so dour its unreal.

Hopefully we spark to life though i can see us drawing with croatia and Italy and getting beaten by Spain - probably scoring one or two goals at most.

They have been dour. In general I think Trap has them under-performing. But we've gone, what is it, 15 games without defeat - or maybe more. I presume three draws won't be enough to get through, but if we sneak one win and don't lose that's 5 points. That is a reasonable target, even given Trap's approach.
