The National, Lisa Hannigan, Steve Earle and Death Grips goodies as FMF honours the late Levon Helm...
We start this week’s Free Music Friday with a blatant and unrepentant plug. To mark the first anniversary of the great Levon Helm’s death, our woman Roisin Dwyer has assembled an all-star bill to pay tribute to The Band member in Dublin’s Sugar Club. Kicking off at 8pm tonight, you’ll be able to feast on The Walls, The Mighty Stef, Republic Of Loose, Gavin Glass, Valerie Francis, The Lost Brothers, Graham Hopkins and Joe Doyle from The Frames, The Trouble Pilgrims, The Group and many more. Admission is €14.50 with proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society.
It was National double-whammy time this week as first [link]wxrt.cbslocal.com/2013/04/12/mp3-the-national-dont-swallow-the-cap-from-new-album-trouble-will-find-me-download[/link] treated us to another Trouble Will Find Me tune, ‘Don’t Take The Cap Off’, and then the trailer for the band’s Mistaken For Strangers film popped up online.
Both, needless to say, sound/look awesome!

Lisa Hannigan contributes a gorgeous reading of ‘Black-Eyed Dog’ to Way To Blue: The Songs Of Nick Drake.
A distillation of the tribute gigs put on by Drake’s original producer Joe Boyd, it also features contributions from the likes of Luluc, Scott Matthews, Green Gartside, Robyn Hitchcock, Vashti Bunyan and Teddy Thompson.
The album is streaming in its entirety at [link]music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/4[/link]
Those lovely people at Popical Island have a new 12-tracker awaiting your Bandcamp delectation.
The Community Games gathers together four new EPs by Cave Ghosts, Ginnels, No Monster Club and Grand Pocket Orchestra and will set you back a miserly €6 for the digital version and €11 for the limited-edition vinyl 12”.
Steve Earle is at his stick-it-to-the-man best on ‘Invisible’, one of the standouts from his The Low Highway album, which is out later this month. Find it at [link]wxrt.cbslocal.com/2013/04/16/steve-earle-returns-with-invisible-free-download[/link]
Death Grips manage to turn The Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’ into even more of an evil mofo at

Laura Marling trails next month’s Once I Was An Eagle album with the feisty Bob Dylan-referencing ‘Master Hunter’.
Father John Misty, Sea Wolf, Futurebirds, Two Gallants, Raptar, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and some fellow by the name of Glen Hansard all feature on the free – but you can tip if you want – Bonnaroo festival sampler.
The free compilations keep on coming courtesy of German label and booking agent Tonetoaster whose Irish brigade includes The Mighty Stef, Knoxville Morning, Master & Dog, Ghost Estates and The Last Tycoons.
Luxuriate in them and their Croatian and Australian stablemates at [link]www.tonetoaster.com/freesampler.html[/link]
This week’s visual treats continue with SXSW sets from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, which sadly aren’t downloadable but most definitely rock!
Finally for the day that’s in it, here’s some classic Levon.
Ah, they don’t write ‘em like that any more. Have a fab weekend and make sure to send your comments and links to @stuartclark66
