Top American classical soloists will perform in aid of Barnardos at the Samuel Barber - Echoes of Ireland concert on Tuesday March 9 in the National Concert Hall, Dublin.
The concert forms part of the centenary celebrations for the American-born Barber who was of Scots-Irish ancestry.
Among the performers will be award-winning Irish-American baritone Brian Mulligan and world-famous soprano Roberta Alexander, both making their Irish concert debuts. The concert is the centrepiece of a week-long series of events celebrating the centenary of the birth of the great American composer and his close connections with Ireland. His best-known work, the Adagio for Strings, is one of the most instantly recognisable pieces of modern classical music and has featured in several movies, including Platoon and Elephant Man.
Mulligan’s father hails from Co. Leitrim and his mother from Cork, and he has performed in some of the major American and English opera houses. In the US he is ranked among the top 100 Irish-Americans in music, dance and acting. Alexander is one of the leading American sopranos, both on the operatic stage and as an orchestral soloist.
