Clapton confirms O2 show in May

Eric Clapton is the latest superstar to confirm a date at the O2, Hot Press has learned.

The legendary guitarist plays the new Dublin arena on Wednesday May 11, 2009. The concert is promoted by Aiken Promotions. Clapton last appeared in Dublin at Malahide Castle, where he did a sell-out show earlier this year. He also sold out the Cork Live At The Marquee gig, underlining his status as one of the most enduring live draws in rock.

Clapton emerged in the 1960s as a member of The Yardbirds. From there he went to John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, before joining the 'supergroup' Cream, alongside Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker and then Blind Faith – whose debut live gig was in front of an astonishing 100,000 people in Hyde Park in London.

It was with Derek and The Dominoes that he recorded the landmark 'Layla' – regarded by many as the song with the greatest guitar riff of all time. He opened his sols account with 461 Ocean Boulevard, hich yielded his first No.1 hit single in a cover of Bob Marley's 'I Shot The Sheriff'.

Other outstanding songs include 'Wonderful Tonight' and the triple Grammy Award winning 'Tears In Heaven', both of which have entered the canon. Eric Clapton was inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2000.
