A campaign ‘Buying Sex is not a Sport’ was launched this March by the National Women’s Council of Ireland (NWCI), urging soccer fans travelling to the World Cup not to use prostitutes in Germany. Prostitution is legal in Germany and apparently wooden sex huts are to be set up in fenced-off areas, with condoms and showers for fans who wish to avail of sex workers services. According to the NCWI, German prostitutes will not be able to meet the demand and women from developing countries will be trafficked into the country for the World Cup.

Syphilis on the increase in UK
British health experts have revealed that syphilis is on the rise in the UK, with a 40% increase in the disease in South London over the last year. Incidence of the disease fell sharply in the 1980s, with greater numbers of people practising safe sex because of AIDS – but the disease is now making a comeback. The situation is so bad that doctors are predicting that the country could be facing an epidemic. The most rapid increase has been seen in women and heterosexual men. Syphilis can go unnoticed for a long time before the symptoms appears. The disease can cause brain damage, bleeding from the heart and can be fatal.

Make sure sex is consensual
The British Home Office have launched a campaign to warn men that they should make certain they have consent before having sex with a woman. The campaign is aimed at reducing the number of sex assaults taking place when a woman is very drunk. According to reports, the British government is considering a change in the law allowing juries to decide if a woman was too drunk to be able to give consent.
