Diggin Up Ghosts
‘Ghosts’ is a chilled, occasionally sombre affair, which fuses slow motion hip-hop beats with cinematic, melodic textures.
Do the ghosts in the title refer to US producer Freddy Fresh’s brushes with trip-hop a decade ago or, earlier still, his flirtations with Detroit techno? Irrespective of what the title means, ‘Ghosts’ is a chilled, occasionally sombre affair, which fuses slow motion hip-hop beats with cinematic, melodic textures.
Sometimes, he strays into party mode. This is most evident on the salsa pop and funky breaks of ‘Sumba Lo’. But in the main, composing soundscapes and perfect pop hooks (check out ‘Feathers’) that would put Carpenter and The Beach Boys, is where he is at these days. Whatever about his past, on ‘Ghosts’, Freddy Fresh has arrived in style.
