An A-Z of the Heineken Green Energy music makers then and now. As on every bill, spot the odd filler
A
Anti-Pop Consortium, Ash: This Northern quartet played HGE in 2001. Never failing to rock the house right out, Ash’s incendiary live appeal has garnered them a place amongst Irish rock royalty.
B
Baby Bird, Bell X1, The Beautiful South, Barenaked Ladies, Bentley Rhythm Ace, Buena Vista Social Club, Beck: Everyone’s favourite quirky alt-rocker is headlining this year’s fest with a solo acoustic show at the Ambassador.
C
Bobby Conn, Counting Crows, The Cranberries, The Charlatans, Tracy Chapman, Catatonia, The Cardigans: Having graced the HGE stage in 1999 with their grainy guitar riffs and infectious melodies, their latest album Long Gone Before Daylight got 8/10 in hotpress, which is, of course, the foremost authority on standards of quality in music. Fact.
D
De La Soul, Evan Dando, Divine Comedy: Now the moniker for a solo Neil Hannon, the full band headlined Dublin Castle in 2001 with The Frames supporting. A stormer of a show, by all accounts.
E
The energy comes not just from the music played on various stages featuring some of the biggest acts in the world, but from the audiences and the general sense of comradely community shared by real music enthusiasts.

F
Bryan Ferry, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Folk Implosion, Faithless: Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss, Rollo and co were a welcome addition the upper ranks of the 1999 HGE bill, kicking out a jaw dropping performance in the Olympia.
G
Bryan G, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Gene Neon & Kojak, Goldie: Bond Baddie, Eastenders muscle and multi talented gold-toothed Godfather of Drum and Bass, Goldie, headlined the very first HGE extravaganza at the Point way back when in 1996.
H
Gemma Hayes, Richie Hawtin, The Hormones, The Hives: Sweden’s finest wowed the Dublin crowd at last year’s HGE gig in Dublin Castle, delivering one of the most high-octane performances in festival history.
I
Right from the first year, Heineken Green Energy became an instant hit with Ireland’s legion of musicians, music fans, the music industry and the media.
J
Jewel, Junior Delgado, the Jesus and Mary Chain, Jeru the Damaja, JJ72: Since last appearing at the HGE festival in 2001, Ireland’s hopefuls have enjoyed world-wide success with the release of their second album I To Sky.
K
King Sativa, Kula Shaker, Brian Kennedy: Kennedy was one of the main attractions of HGE 1999 and continues to enjoy a high profile, not least through his recent TV series celebrating the act of song.
L
Luke, Lupine Howl, Lo Fidelity Allstars: Mentioned in the same breath as Fatboy Slim and the Chemical Brothers, this UK electronica outfit had dancefloors well and truly moving with their 2002 HGE gig.

M
Muse, Morcheeba, Manic Street Preachers, Mouse On Mars, Mercury Rev, Mau Mau, Moby: Moby headlined the festival in 2000 after gaining international success and multi-platinum status with his breakthrough album, Play.
N
Type O Negative: Metal fiends Pete Steele and co left bleeding ears in their wake after a particularly incendiary live performance at HGE 1997.
O
Ocean Colour Scene, Beth Orton: Having headlined HGE in 1997, Beth Orton has gone on to become one of the major players in the UK alt-acoustic scene.
P
The Propellerheads, P.O.D: Christian rockers P.O.D. brought the house down last year at the Ambassador, with a gig that hit a ten on the distortion scale – rawk of the highest order.
Q
Finley Quaye: Despite dropping off the popular radar in recent years, Quaye’s popularity was at a high when he played the HGE festival in 1998. Where is he now, eh?
R
Damien Rice, Relish, Red House Painters, Reef, Rare, The Revs: Releasing their long awaited debut album Suck in 2003, The Revs played a blistering opener at Dublin Castle last year where they were opening for Muse and The Hives.

Texas, Travis: Scottish masters of the sweet and simple consolidated their breakthrough success with a show at HGE 2001.
U
UB40: the perennial Birmingham skankers brought their mellow reggae to HGE in 1999.
V
Van Morrison: Ireland’s most enduring legend played an “intimate” set in the Olympia in 2002, wowing fans with a set-list that included hi-lights from his four decade-spanning career.
W
Jim White, The White Stripes, Warchild, Whipping Boy, The Waterboys, The Wailers, Wilt: Having played HGE in the year previous to a decidedly rapt audience, Wilt released their critically acclaimed debut album My Medicine in 2002.
X
X from the one and only Transformers: He’s got the voice, the hair, the songs, the looks and the package.
Y
Ultimately, Heineken Green Energy is all about you, the gig-goer, without whom the music wouldn’t be possible
Z
ZZ Top: This band brought the concept of Hair Rock to a whole other level in the ’80s… Nah, we’re just kidding. ZZ Top never played HGE (praise Bob!) but no self-respecting music A-Z is complete without ’em.
