The 26th of February marked the 11th Oscar Wilde Awards which recognizes Irish film making at its best.
The Awards bring together the US and Irish film making forces for a night of celebration and stardom. Hosted by J.J Abrams, the Oscar Wilde Awards took place in his Bad Robot studios for the fifth year in a row.
Founded by Trina Vargo, the night is put together to honor Irish talent - and by Irish, well that term is quite lax. For example, it was James Corden who was bestowed with the "Honorary Irishman" award for his Riverdance performance on his CBS Late Late Show.
Snow Patrol and Roisin O were the soundtrack to the night with Snow Patrol receiving an award. Frontman Gary Lightbody took this opportunity to poke some fun at US politics; "The U.S.-Ireland alliance does sound very serious — sounds like we’re going to war… perhaps against ISIS, but hopefully against Donald Trump,” he offered, to enthusiastic applause.
Cork born Sarah Greene, star of Sky Atlantic's Penny Dreadful, paid tribute to the success of the Irish at this years Academy Awards during her acceptance speech, aptly naming it the 'Irish Movement'.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens' leading lady Daisy Ridley spoke of her meteoric rise since her casting in the multi-million franchise and of her experience on filming on Ireland's geographic relic, Skellig Michael. "The Skelligs are unlike anything I've ever seen, and it's wonderful for audiences around the world to share in that beauty translated onto film."
Among the other attendees were Lenny Abrahamson, Amy Huberman, Ed Guiney, Steven Spielberg and Idris Elba. Guests were treated to a twist on Irish delicatessens as Irish cocktail sausages with a whiskey mustard, beer-battered fish n’ chips with jalapeno tartar, a selection of Kerrygold cheeses and Barry's Tea to wash it all down with.
