‘You Raise Me Up’ is one of the most performed songs in the history of popular music – but the accolades keep on flying, with Anthony Kearns performance in Philadelphia just the latest in a long list.
‘You Raise Me Up’, the modern classic written by Ireland’s Brendan Graham and Rolf Lovland, was performed by Irish tenor Anthony Kearns for the Pope in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The song was performed to an estimated audience between 800,000 and 1million people. Kearns' performance was also watched by millions via TV streaming around the world. Anthony was the last act to appear prior to the Papal Mass.
Hot Press has established that this is the second occasion this year that ‘You Raise Me Up’ was performed for the Pope. In January, at the Santo Tomas University in Manila, it was performed for Pope Francis by Angeline Quinto to hundreds of thousands.
In what has been another extraordinary year for landmark performances of the song, it was also delivered by Hayley Westenra as a tribute to Christchurch and its people at Opening Ceremony of Cricket World Cup in February.
