As the only girl in the family, with three brothers ahead of her, Eleanor has always rebelled against the conventional ‘feminine’ culture. She has spent her life, thus far, using her poetry to express herself emotionally and socially. Her dream is to be able to help people with no more than ink on paper. She has always wanted to be a writer – especially since realising that being a sugar plum fairy princess is too much like hard work.
And now for Eleanor's WRITE HERE, WRITE NOW entry ...
Dearest Babydoll
Dearest Babydoll
One day
You will be older
And you will have a device.
It may be a phone
Or a laptop
Or some new creation
We cannot yet fathom.
But once you have it
You will
Undoubtedly
Find “social media” –
A truly miraculous invention
That allows us
To make friends
With people we’ve never met
Half way around the world.
You will speak your mind,
See new things,
Be yourself.
But, dearest
Babydoll I must warn you
That this place is not
All that it seems.
It is a place
Where demons lurk
To blind your heart
And crush your spirit.
The deadly sins:
Greed, gluttony,
Lust and pride
Envy, sloth
And worst of all –
Wrath.
There are bad people
Who slither through
The networks like snakes
Tempting others
With fruit of hatred
And visions of death.
My dearest Babydoll
You will not be
One of these people.
You will not be
Led by the need to hurt
Or the want of destruction.
You, dearest
Babydoll,
Will be a beacon.
You will show kindness,
Compassion,
And inclusivity.
You will strive
For unity and light
In the digital space
And fight those
Who scream
For darkness and hate
Because you,
My dearest
Babydoll
Are a child of technology
And you will bring peace
To the digital war
