Indie band cut no corners on third album.
The Cadence of Others is the wonderfully titled third studio album from We Cut Corners. Opening with a hypnotic nursery-song hook on first track ‘Middle Kids’, the album pulls you in – and doesn’t let you go for its full ten tracks. The meaning of the album title is evident early on: the duo have let experiences, people and conversations wash over them, then forged lyrics – with appropriate instrumental accompaniments – from the cadences of everyday life.
The album is threaded together intricately by lovely piano and string codas, which lead one song into the next. The recording took place in a church, which goes perfectly with the hymn-like quality of some of these songs.
But the real driving force – as with all We Cut Corners albums – is the lyrical weight. There are great turns of phrase throughout: “Kill you with my kindness/ blind you with my blandness”; and “I was a reckless child/ now I’m a childless wreck” spring to mind, as the band negotiate fizzled out love, growing pains and isolation.

We Cut Corners must also be praised for pushing the limits of a song line (very rarely do words like “consequentially” and “quintessential” fit seamlessly into lyrics), and for approaching each complex issue with an arsenal of fresh imagery. In their beautiful new single ‘Oh’, two partners in a frustrated relationship are described variously as “a concubine” and “a canary in a coal mine” who “throw love into a blackhole.” John Duignan’s crooning vocals help make this track one of the best they’ve ever done: it’s the crowning achievement on a fantastic album.
