Everything This Way shoots straight in at the summit
Walking On Cars' debut album Everything This Way has entered the Irish album charts at No. 1.
The debut LP from the Dingle quintet, who were crowned as Hot Press covers stars for the first time last issue, has beaten off stiff competition from Adele, Justin Bieber and David Bowie to claim pole position – a powerful indication of their spectacular popularity here in Ireland.
There's another new entry within the top five, as Sia's This Is Acting debuts at No. 5, while the unlikely names of Kenny Rogers, Rod Stewart and The Bee Gees all charge into the upper reaches.
Rihanna's ANTI, which was released as a free download through Tidal, only managed to reach No. 12 – though this may well be an album that will run and run with the launch of new singles.
Walking On Cars achievement in topping the charts is another confirmation of "the Hot Press effect." Over the past 12 months, a series of artists have gone straight to No.1, in the same fortnight that they appeared on the front cover of the magazine.
"It's great for Hot Press to be in a position to support acts like Walking On Cars," Hot Press marketing manager Mark Hogan said. "We'd been really looking forward to their debut album, and its release offered an opportunity to get fully behind them. It's brilliant to see that it worked for the band. But the real beauty of it is that the album genuinely deserves to go to No.1."
