Derrick Carter and Luke Solomon’s Classic stamp reaches its third compilation, and there’s no let up in the quality control department. In a period when so many house producers are still looking to the disco filter as a device to gain attention, it’s revealing that the Classic stable looks to funk sources and employs more subtle, minimal house grooves.
Examples of this almost unique sound can be found here on Carter’s own ‘Boompty Boomp Theme’ and Losoul’s swinging anthem ‘Lies’. At the same time, to categorise the Classic sound into one neat little bracket would be churlish: the label celebrates the diversity of house music, and on 10 Minutes there’s deep, techy tracks courtesy of Nail, Home & Garden and Rob Mello, an incredible organic reconstruction of Isolee’s ‘Beau Mot Plage’ by Freeform Five, Gemini’s cautionary tale of the music industry set over a jacking, minimal groove and child like innocence combined with irresistible hooks on Markus Nikolai’s ‘Bushes’. A benchmark collection for everyone else to aspire to.
