U2 are back in Dublin following a songwriting sojourn in the medieval Moroccan city of Fez.
Assisted by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, the boys have been “writing and recording from morning ‘til night for the past couple of weeks. They’re on a roll and the ideas are coming thick and fast”.
No one’s saying whether the tunes are for the follow-up to Vertigo or the score they’re assembling for the Broadway version of Spider-Man.
The first stage adaptation of a Marvel Comics superhero, it’s being directed by Julie Taymor who won two Tony Awards for what she did with Disney’s The Lion King.
Fez already has a place in U2 folklore by dint of being the location for 1991’s ‘Mysterious Ways’ video shoot. While there this time, Bono and The Edge attended the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music, which featured a United Nations of Swedish, American, Iranian, South African, French, Portuguese, Brazilian, Turkish, Mauritanian, Pakistani, Spanish, Cuban, Beninese, Indian, Syrian, British, Uzbekistani and Lebanese musicians.
Meanwhile, the Bono-edited July issue of Vanity Fair is on the newsstands now, with a choice of 20 different covers.
Shot by veteran snapper Annie Leibovitz, the various combinations include Muhammad Ali and Barack Osama, George Bush and Desmond Tutu, Brad Pitt and Djimon Hounsou, Madonna and Maya Angelou plus Bono with both Jordan’s Queen Rania and Condoleezza Rice.
