Edge talks about the new album, Bono scoops 'MusiCares' award and guests on Elvis tribute TV show
U2 have revealed that they're aiming to have their new album completed and in the shops by early next summer.
"We're on a roll," says The Edge of the Hanover Quay recording sessions. "It's getting more like the early U2 records. Really simple, stripped-down arrangements. That's what we're hungry for – music with that life-force."
Tracks already in the can include 'Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own', 'Original Of The Species' and 'All Because Of You' which Bono sums up in two words – "The Who!"
Talking of young Mr. Hewson, he's just been confirmed as one of the guests on the NBC Elvis Lives special.
Airing next month in the States to coincide with the 25th anniversary of The King's death, the show also features No Doubt, Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, Dave Matthews, Chuck D, Denis Leary, Steven Tyler and Dennis Hopper.
Bono also has an engagement on February 21 2003 when he'll be in Manhattan to pick up the 'MusiCares Person of the Year' Award.
"Bono is a living symbol of what the MusiCares Foundation and the Recording Academy stand for – his musical accomplishments are matched only by his endeavors to effect positive change on the human condition worldwide," says the Academy's new chairman, Garth Fundis. "We're truly privileged to be honoring this gifted and dedicated visionary."
Finally, U2 soundman Joe O'Herhily was one of the big winners at the TEC (Technical Excellence & Creativity) Awards in Los Angeles.
The Leesider – who's been with Bono & Co. since time immemorial – beat off stiff competition from his Madonna, Janet Jackson, Dave Matthews Band and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young counterparts in the 'Tour Production' category. Also honored were his Monitor Engineer colleagues Don Garber, Raza Sufi, Niall Slevin and Dave Skaff, and tour company Clair Brothers.
