Many will argue that the crew behind the new Top Gear were fighting a losing battle before even beginning and unfortunately, these figures seem to suggest that also.
There's been plenty of promotion in the run up to Top Gear's revival but it appears it wasn't enough to see them soar.
Last night's debut saw 4.4 million tune in to see the long-awaited return of the motor show. Although that may seem an impressive stand-alone figure, ultimately it's 2 million down on average of the last series starring the original trio Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. Many critics have slammed the new series for it's lack of originality and innovation, stating that they stuck rigidly to the tried and tested formula. Furthermore, many zeroed in on the chemistry (or rather lack-of) between Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc that really fell flat.
Perhaps Amazon HQ are celebrating this morning at the released figure as The Grand Tour starring the aforementioned original trio is due to air this August. With comparatives guaranteed between the two shows and the loyal following of Clarkson, the BBC will no doubt be anxious to see how The Grand Tour fares.
This is the first episode however in a 72 hour line up filmed for the new Top Gear so it is still all to play for. Episode 2 of Top Gear starring celebrity cameos from Sharleen Spiteri, Seasick Steve and Tinie Tempah will air next Sunday on BBC 1.
