World music legends add another fine chapter to their storied career.
Formed back in the land before time existed (that would be 1979) Malian outfit Tinariwen weren’t “discovered” until 1998 and it’s only really recently that they’ve begun making a real global impact. Tassili is the fifth record from the band and it’s a powerfully hypnotic offering that’s full of beautiful guitar-work and bewitching melodies. Adopting more of an acoustic approach than on previous efforts, Tassili is all the morer organic and tribal for that. The mix of great vocals, addictive rhythms and a sense of communal involvement make this a great record to groove to. ‘Tenere Taghim Tossam’, in particular, is an out and out classic. Features TV On The Radio’s Kyp Malone, it blends Eastern, Western and African influences together to create a stunning soundscape. Which is the Tinariwen recipe. It’s gpt all the spice you need. Now, go eat...
