Swans’ latest reunion sees them sinking to new depths.
Nearly a decade in the making, The Coldest Winter For A Hundred Years is the latest offering from Liverpool-based new wave also-rans the Wild Swans and it sees the Scousers deal with the now hackneyed subject of “Broken Britain.” Their third stab at making music together, the band is once again masterminded by ex-Teardrop Explodes man Paul Simpson. Over the course of 12 tracks he shares with us his disappointment that his country isn’t what it used to be (snore). A plodding effort, most of the songs limp along at a snail’s pace with Simpson’s nondescript voice offering little in the way of excitement. The likes of ‘Liquid Mercury’ and ‘English Electric Lighting’ are as dull and dreary as the images he paints of his once green and pleasant land. It took ten years to make this?
