Day Two of The Music Show will keep the high calibre of live performances, guest speakers, industry seminars and musical classes going right through until teatime. On stage, the likes of Fight Like Apes and The Coronas will be just a couple of bands getting the crowd going. 12.30pm IT’S A HIT! HOW BROADCASTERS USE & ABUSE MUSIC (AND SOMETIMES LOVE IT TOO)
A discussion of how music is treated on TV and radio. The implications of music being so available on the Internet. What makes a great music television programme? What is the future of broadcast music? What kind of contribution can Internet broadcasting make to the viability of an artist’s life and work?
MARK COOPER (Creative Head, Music Entertainment BBC), MALCOLM GERRIE (CEO, Whizz Kid Entertainment), JOHN KELLY (Broadcaster), JOHN MCMAHON (Head of RTÉ 2fm), JOHN ROBB (Broadcaster/Musician)
2pm MAKING MILLIONS OR LOSING YOUR SHIRT – THE PUBLICITY MACHINE & THE PERILS OF RUNNING LIVE MUSIC & OTHER EVENTS
Live music is where it’s at – or so the new conventional wisdom has it. But as ticket sales come under pressure too, how can we sell the festival events that have been so important to the growth of music and to funding artists over the past decade? How important is the publicity machine? And, from an artist’s perspective, is life on the road all it’s cracked up to be?
JUSTIN GREEN (MCD, Publicity & Marketing Director), OLLIE JENNINGS (Manager, The Saw Doctors), FRANK MURRAY (Manager, The Mighty Stef), JOHN SPILLANE
3pm KILLING BONO: U2 CAN HAVE A FILM MADE ABOUT YOU
It started with a book: I Was Bono’s Doppelganger. It ended in Killing Bono, a title suggested by the U2 lead singer himself, for a movie that is ready to take the world by storm. But what are the challenges of making films about real characters – including the biggest rock band in the world? What is it like to have your identity stolen, to be turned into a fictional character? And how do you write music now for a band back then that believed it was ready to take on the world?
JOE ECHO (Musician), NEIL MCCORMICK (Journalist/Author), NICK HAMM (Director, Killing Bono)
4pm ARE PRODUCERS THE REAL STARS? JUST WHAT DOES GO ON IN THE STUDIO?
In a world of Garageband, Pro Tools and Logic Pro, bands and artists are far more knowledgeable about recording than ever before. But still the work of the producer can be the defining factor that turns base musical metal into gold and platinum discs. So how does a great producer approach his or her work? Is it necessary to lay down the law or is the artist’s vision paramount? And when, if ever, is an artist best to go it alone?
STEVE LILLYWHITE (Producer, U2, Peter Gabriel), MICK GLOSSOP (Producer, Van Morrison, Frank Zappa, The Waterboys), JULIE FEENEY
