Saturday's shows, seminars and debate will feature Republic Of Loose, Andy Gill and Louis Walsh among many, many others
The opening day of The Music Show is jam-packed with exciting Irish acts performing live as well as respected figures talking about the issues affecting the industry today and sharing their wide wealth of knowledge with the world. CODES, The Cast Of Cheers and Republic Of Loose will all be entertaining the RDS crowd with some incredible live sets.
Aside from the great performances taking place on stage, there will be a whole host of seminars, panels, workshops and musical masterclasses, all conducted by the best in the business.
So prepare for some heated and illustrious debate from some industry heavyweights, including the likes of Louis Walsh, esteemed producer Andy Gill and Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan. Over at the masterclasses, Newton Faulkner and Conor Guilfoyle (among others) will be teaching you everything you always wanted to know but were too afraid to ask about their respective instruments.
On top of all that, Hot Press is proud to announce that Saturday afternoon will also see the official launch of The Philip Lynott Exhibition, to be unveiled by the Irish musical icon’s mother, Philomena Lynott.

11am MUSIC: THE OPPORTUNITIES IN EDUCATION (Student Panel)

12pm THE CRISIS IN MUSIC: IS THERE A WAY OUT OF THE MESS THE RECORD BUSINESS IS IN?
Record sales have been falling. And there is little or no agreement on a business model for the digital future. So can the record business find a way forward that will work for artists? What is the role of the major labels? Can going the indie route really work when all else is in turmoil? Or is it still all down to talent – and the ability to spot it?
JOHN REID (CEO, Warner Music Europe & VC, Warner Music International), RICHARD O’DONOVAN (A&R Consultant), STEPHEN KING (MD, Believe Digital UK), JERRY FISH
1pm COMMUNICATIONS & MUSIC: HOW CAN WE ENSURE THAT THE PIPER IS PAID – AND OTHER IMPORTANT MATTERS OF PUBLIC POLICY
The panel will discuss the convergence of communications media, the development of the smart economy, the role of the Internet, copyright issues, illegal downloading and legislation, music policy on television and radio in Ireland – and where the revenue for artists will come from in the digital era.
MINISTER EAMON RYAN (Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources), MARC MAROT (CEO, SEG International), LOUIS WALSH (X-Factor, Westlife, Jedward), PAUL BRADY, VICTOR FINN (CEO, IMRO)
2.30pm WE DON’T NEED NO EDUCATION. WRONG!
With Amy Winehouse, The Kooks and Damien Dempsey – to name just a few – coming through music colleges, the case for educating yourself as a musician or an industry mover and shaker is stronger than ever. But is there enough Government support?
OSSIE KILKENNY (Financial Advisor & Industry Expert), KEVIN NIXON (Brighton Bristol Institute of Modern Music), PADDY DUNNING (Sound Training Centre & Temple Lane Studios), PETE HOLIDAI (Ballyfermot College of Further Education)

3.30pm IT’S ALL DOWN TO THE SONG – SOME THINGS IN ROCK ‘N ROLL NEVER CHANGE
Songs have always been central to popular music. But in an era of formatted radio and digital anarchy, is that core value being challenged? Can you still know a hit immediately you hear one? And what is – or should be – the goal of someone who sits down to write a song?
KIM FRANKIEWICZ (VP, International at Universal Music Publishing), ANDY CAIRNS (Therapy?), ASHLEIGH FLYNN (Musician & songwriter), BRIAN KENNEDY
4.30pm TECHNOLOGY IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES: IT KILLS US. IT SETS US FREE
Artists and film-makers have benefited hugely from the extraordinary developments in technology over the past two decades. Laptops and handheld cameras have made the job of a record producer or a film director so much more accessible. But has a vital spark been lost? Are there far too many records being made, too many films being released? How important is it as an artist – whether as a musician or a film-maker – to keep it real? And are music and movies really happy bedfellows?
ANDY GILL (Producer/Gang Of Four), MAURICE LINNANE (Writer/Director), NICK KELLY (Musician & film-maker), LIAM BATES (Composer)
