Wayne Coyne talks about his band's recent collaboration with "big Flaming Lips fan" Miley in Hot Press, on sale now.
Bound for Forbidden Fruit next month, Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips opens up in the new issue of Hot Press about Bob Dylan's aloofness on tour, the recent sacking of drummer Kliph Scurlock, and Miley Cyrus.
The Flaming Lips recently collaborated with the pop superstar and got on famously.
"Miley is a freak by anybody's standard," Coyne says. "She said even three or four years ago, when she was still considered 'Hannah Montana', that she was a big Flaming Lips fan. I've known that for a while. It must have just been something in our music, or something that she perceived about us, that she reached out to us and said, 'Hey maybe we should do some music together'.
"I was like, 'No shit, I think you're great! I think you're crazy! It was mostly just that."
Following a birthday greeting Cyrus sent to Coyne on Twitter, he called the starlet and they were immediately talking about collaborating.
"She's such a great 'don't give a fuck' sort of personality. And that really is true, when you're around her: she's really a wonderful kind of freak."
Coyne says that, contrary to Sinead O'Connor's claims during her Twitter spat with Cyrus, the young singer is most definitely making her own decision.
"I've been around much lesser stars than Miley Cyrus, who are complete fucking horrible pains in the ass and are as fake as they come. Miley is just not like that. She's doing her thing."
That includes plans for a forthcoming live collaboration between the two artists on 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' at an awards ceremony in Manchester. A recorded Flaming Lips version with Sean Lennon also includes Cyrus. A fan video of the performance can be seen below
