Kiwi rockers go glam punk, to fine effect
Remember The Datsuns? Sure you do. They were the lank-haired Kiwis who were once declared the saviours of rock ‘n’ roll by all and sundry only to be inevitably chewed up and spat out after six months. All of a sudden nipple-high guitars and looking like a geography teacher was cool (we’re looking at you, Young Knives and We Are Scientists) and long hair, denim jackets and being able to out-drink Calum Best and Paul Danan was a thing of the past. Well, despite their detractors, The Datsuns are still alive and kicking, and Head Stunts is the fourth record from those lovers of gonad-constricting trousers. And guess what? It’s their best effort to date. Chock full of glam rock references and Dead Boys inspired riffs, Dolf and co are continuing to kick against the pricks by refusing to buckle to fashion or trends and are now adding some much needed punk swagger into the mix too. More venomous than an episode of America’s Top Model, Head Stunts proves there’s life in the band yet, so get practising your rock moves in front of the mirror now folks.
